my registration expired in april, i couldnt get it re-registered because of my financial situation. but lets say for instance i sell it tomorrow, and i sign the title over, am i liable if the buyer gets pulled over on the way home? how does that work..

odds are ill get it re-registered this week but im just curious

if you sign the title over, your job is to remove the plates and return them to dmv, they will give you a receipt. If you let them use your plates I imagine you can get a ticket of some sort. And if there is an accident I'm not sure how the liability works - if they have insurance on the car or are still using yours So they should either tow the car away without your plates or register it and bring back the new plates & drive it away.

if you give them your plates and its unregistered its on you. NEVER GIVE YOUR PLATES WHEN SELLING A CAR. once the title is signed and all your stuff is gone/removed from the car, getting it home is their problem. in your reciept its always good to toss something smooth in like ''upon signing i acknowledge that the seller is not responsible for any damages or repairs on the vehicle (list vin)''

"As is" is usually a good way to cover this but you dont want to let a stranger take possesion of your plates. In theory or worst case you could be insinuated in a crime that was commited with your registration. And since those are actually not your property then I would recommend turning them in personally.

i thought a receipt like that doesnt really matter unless its certified by a clerk. all the guy has to say is that it isnt his signature

forget about all the what-ifs. if you sign the title, you remove the plates. if he is going to use fictitious plates, then he had better bring them with him. you cannot legally allow him to use your plates, so anything that happens after that is your responsibility both financially and legally. don't let someone else use your plates; that will save you a lot of headaches. period.
