Does anybody know if the diesel Cruze will actually happen in 2013, or is it still in infancy? If so, will it be offered with a manual trans? Al, you out there?

Its got to be turbo, otherwise it will be a complete and total dog. And it had better get mid 40's on the MPG otherwise its a wasted effort. If the VW Jetta can do it, GM had better figure it out as well. The Jetta is its only real competition, so aim high GM and don't price yourself out of the market GM should do just fine.

Diesels are generally underrated when it comes to EPA testing. A quick trip to fueleconomy.gov confirms that most people destroy the EPA estimates. 40mpg+ combined is going to be lovely, and is way better than the 28mpg people are seeing with the regular turbo model.

Al correct me if Im wrong but when I was in GMASEP alot of the teachers were former GM corporate employees. My one teacher told us from the very beginning that small turbo diesels were, are and always will be the key to conservation but the topic for the American market had come up 100s of times on the GM chopping block and got shot down because of the big rig, black cloud spewing, rotten egg stigma that diesels have in the US.

The article states that the diesel cruze in australia averages 34mpg combined, which is pretty decent. For comparison sake, fueleconomy.gov states the 2010 4 door Jetta TDI is also rated at 34mpg combined, and users are reporting an average of 38.1 combined.

While I would love to see world beating numbers out of this car, I would be perfectly happy as long as it ends up with similar mpg numbers and still comes in a bit cheaper than the Jetta. The warranty alone would be a gib selling point for a lot of people with long highway commutes that choose the TDIs.

A friend of mine just traded in his '05 Mini Cooper S on a 2011 Golf TDI, and the only downside he's worried about is the fact that his 36k mile warranty will be shot in less than 2 years due to his commute (Easton, PA to Princeton, NJ).

i get low 30s if i reset it and do the NY-NJ drive(75mph, not the better 65), but i get the 28ish while up here due to the long warm ups i give it. I can remote start it twice(runs for 10 min each) before i have to put the key in and start it normally. so i let it run 10-15 min before driving it, at 0'F to -20'F , thats the only real choice.
