Ballsiest thing I've done with a car yet...
... is attempting to replace both of my rear quarter panels and tail panel. 
I started removing the passenger quarter today. Everything has gone very well so far. I started by stripping all of the paint off of the sail panel, and then I removed all of the lead from the seam underneath. Then it was on to a LOT of spot weld cutting, which I still haven't finished. I'll post pics of the process tomorrow. The only thing is that it's pretty indimidating since I'm putting on full quarter panels, from the door jamb back. Wish me luck...

good luck! i know what youre going thru. a buddy of mine has a 68' dodge coronet and there was a sh!tload of spotwelds on the floorpans alone which we had to drill out, grind down

Unfortunately that's almost standard practice these days on all first gen cars.
Billy if you're going to be working out there late any night this weekend let me know. I'd love to stop by and check out how you're doing it. I've never gone as far as replacing an entire quarter and I'm always eager to learn something new.

my 68 will need both quarters, but should be a little easier witout the sail panel seam  .... then again i dont have a roof to keep the body lined up after 38 years of sitting

we had to cross brace the **** outta my friends 70 chevelle SS when he cut the floor and trunk out of it

it isnt easy. I got lucky with the 1/4s being done on the chevelle, along with the floors, but when it came to my dads 54 Chebbie, we got parts from an arizona car sent to us and put them on, boy was that fun. Now when it comes to the 33 plymouth, its all gonna have to be made by hand.

It was a long day, I was out there from 8 to 5 or so. Things are coming along well.
Ian: This car is as rough as 30 grit sandpaper. The only panel I'm NOT messing with is the roof.
Paul: When I get this one done and start on the driver's side I'll give you a call. I'm still getting the flow down right now.

Yep. The DSE ones.
I *think* they require the trunk to be cut for installation, so I am just going to temporarily attach the new outer wheelhouses to the old inners, then wait until after the quarter and the other metal is on before I do the tubs.
Cleko fasteners FTW.

Funny, yesterday I watched most of the dvd hot rod mailed people. Floor replacement & other metal work on the goodmark chevelle. How refreshing it is to see how much I don't know how to do.

When putting on the new one, drill a few small holes, and screw, or rivet the new one in place, before welding it on, once everything is lined up right, then you can weld the new one on. Just my 2 cents.

you need to get one of those spot weld cutters they work great i have one around here soemwere!

Yeah, that's what the Clekos are for. I drill an 1/8" hole and pop a Cleko in there (they are like a spring-loaded mini clamp). I'm definetly taking my time lining everything up!
