shifter problems

I am trying to reinstall the automatic shifter knob on my 96 T/A and when i get it attached, i can not put the car completely in park therefore i am not able to remove the keys from the ignition. I think i tried everything but i am about to smash it with a hammer in rage. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

What did you change? Just the shifter knob?

take the knob off and make sure you can do it by hand yourself. they can sometimes be a little sticky. its actually more difficult without the knob on than with it for me.

Well I took off the center console for some cleaning and now the knob will not go back on properly. The knob attaches but the button is not able to come back up all the way to completely lock the transmission. Without the knob the shifter works fine but with it the button is too depressed and not able to recover. Took the knob apart and tried everything but nothing is working. You think maybe I need a new knob?

that or its not fully seating. take it off then try to really push it on, i would do it with the car in park.
