if you do that... i would think all the emissions would be thrown off and not passing inspection....

All my cars guages ran fine when I had Stage 1 Automotive, hack my stock wiring system to a basic 5 wire system (Carb, Distributer, Altenator, Battery, Starter.), and we just clipped the emmision controls, and the computer remained in the dashboard. Weather it did anything or not, it really didnt matter. I was running a basic non-emmision 350, and my only tuning I could have used was a Carb tune-up.
I think the only guage that didnt work was Volts, and engine temp.

Speedo is mechanical, temp guage will prolly need to be rewired, tach should be ok, oil pressure should be ok, and fuel should be ok.

none of the gauges are connected to the computer. When I yanked the TPI off my car I unplugged the massive amounts of wires going into the computer, followed each one and cut it. Just make note of where all the sensors for the gauges are and dont cut those wires ...easy as 1 2 3
the ignition I believe has 3-4 wires going into the computer controlled distributors ...when using a mechanical HEI you need 2. Get out a diagram and find which wire powers the ignition, hook it up to "BATT", find the wire that goes to the tach and hook it up to "TACH" ...easy easy easy
