it probably means a wire that is "hot" with the ignition on. get a test light, start probing with the key on and off!

The autozone site has wiring diagrams.

That would be the best bet. I dont think there are too many ignition wires in the column its self. Dont go tapping into anything that is hot with the ignition on, that would be bad in the end

Just run a wire down to the fuse box and do it right the first time. If you just start tapping hot wires you could cause more problems for yourself i in the long run.
If you tap off the back of the panel you should also fuse the wire to your device

You should have 3 wires, hot, ground, and ign. signal. Tap power from the fuse box in the side of the dash, find one that only has power when the key is on. You want to connect to the output side so if you have a short the fuse will blow ( I also used an inline fuse to the shiftlight just to be safe. )/ There is a bolt under the lower dash panel this is used for common grounds on the dash. The light feed is connected as listed below:
On an LT1 car:
Option 1: There is a small box ( about 1" square ) on the wiring harness to the ign. module, that is the Tach filter. it's within 6 " of the plug that goes into the ign. module. Tap into the black/white wire there.
Option2:
Tap into the ECM feed.

Could be due to the year. The diagram is from a 95, maybe 97 has difference colors?
Which shiftlight are you using? I have an Autolight and when you turn the ign. on the light come on for 2 seconds as a selftest.

if you have a test light, i would use it to ensure you have what you think you have referring to power and ground.
