Hey I had a little problem with the new beater. v6 85 camaro 2.8 with 3,4 bottem end. It wouldnt start, I tapped the plugs on the dist cap and it started and drove but has a little misfiring issue.
Thought the cap and rotor was bad so I replaced the cap rotor and coil pack,
Now it wont start at all. Everything is hooked back up the same way as it was before (only one bolt holding the coil pack in isnt tightened all the way down but the other 3 are tight).
Any one have any ideas...I dont think its getting any spark.

Could be the HEI module.

Check the firing order.

I dont think im getting spark from the coil pack. I put a plug on the wire coming from it and grounded it out and cranked it over, no spark.

And I checked the firing order a few times making sure I put the plug wires on the same way I took them off and then double checking that compared to a diagram I found online and that seems fine.

Bad ground somewhere maybe? It didn't work, then it did, so I'm guessing it grounded itself again. I'd check around and try to find it, you don't want to get stranded on the road cause of that.
Or, worse case, could be the ECM. It happened to my Dakota. I replaced every single ignition related component, only to find out the ECM was done.

does it ground through the coil pack mount?

coil pack could be hooked up without mounting it at all and itll still work iv been told.

I played with the contacts going to the icm from the inside of the dizzy, then put the cap back on and went around the cap with the plug wires untill it fired up. My thought is that the person who set this dizzy up last time didnt start with number one plug wire at the same spot on the cap as indicated online, but at the next terminal and when I tried different starting postitions it finally started up.

Now it runs better than before thank god!

But a guy on TGO has a dizzy with good icm NEW cap rotor and wires, Shipped for 20 bucks he was paypaled before I fixed my issue so that will be in the back seat just incase!

If the coil is not grounded it will burn out taking the module with it.The coil must ground against the bracket. If it is like the set up in the early V6 S10's where the coil is mounted on a bracket make sure the bracket is clean of rust. Clean the bracket where the coil mounts and where it bolts to the motor. Use die-electric grease on the bracket where it bolts to the engine and where the coil mounts. As an added step run a stainless steel ground strap to the bracket as well.
