Thinking about buying a 1st or 2nd gen Camaro?

If you are, please get whatever photos of the trim tag and engine/trans/rear stampings you can from the seller and post them up. There is a ton of fake tags out there already and they keep getting better. I've got a couple of resources to help verify tags and engine/VIN stampings so definitely ask before purchasing. I just had a member from another board email me about his 69 Z28 motor and it was a restamp. He's crushed and so is his bank account. And there are people/experts who will testify on stampings if it's needed and hopefully that won't happen to anyone here.

there is no better piece of advice: ask questions BEFORE you buy.

there is very little recourse after you buy if the seller misrepresents anything about the car. you will be stuck with your purchase and whatever it is that you thought it wasn't, and vice versa.

of course there are countless resources online, but if you get stuck and/or can't find them, then Jeff is a good person to ask. he has forgotten more than most people know about first/second gens.

For anyone that doesn't already know, you can have your Pontiac vehicle verified through PHS (Pontiac Historic Services) for a small fee. They have the records on most Pontiacs and all you need is to give them the VIN and the fee and if the car is in their database you will get paperwork showing all the options the car had. Their website is:

Pontiac Historic Services

For vehicles sold in Canda you can contact GM of Canada Vintage Vehicle Services if you think the car was originally delivered to Canada and sold their. My 70 SS396 L78 car has GM of Canada documentation which lists every option that came on the car. There is a small fee but if the car you ask about was never sold there and not in their records then there is no fee. Their website is:

GM of Canada Vintage Vehicle Services

And don't forget, that starting in 1972 GM finally had the engine coded into the VIN so proving things got a little easier from that point forward.
