My LS1 Trans Am Projector & HID Conversion Thread

Hey all,

So I'm huge into lighting and have been for years. I did projectors and HID's in my last F-body (93 Z28):
http://ls1tech.com/forums/appearance...installed.html
http://ls1tech.com/forums/appearance...ogs-match.html

I have 'em in my motorcycle, my Jeep, many past Jeeps, etc. Lighting is HUGE to me as I like to see the road (or trail) ahead of me, especially when going fast.

I just ordered some Hella Projectors through my work:
2 HELLA PROJECTOR 60MM HB3 SAE LOW BEAM 998570001
2 HELLA PROJECTOR 60MM HB3 SAE HIGH BEAM 998570021

They should be here next week. I'll update the thread with photos and info as the conversion progresses.

This is my car with my g/f posing (it was freezing btw):

Parking lot (cell phone) shot of before:

UPS brought me some presents today

Bulbs, ballasts, wiring should be here by Friday or early next week.

EDIT:
Okay, got bored today after work and decided that I REALLY hate my factory headlights. So, I did an install of the low beam projectors and HID's. I have brackets that I will be ordering for the lows and highs to take care of proper mounting and aesthetics. But, for this moment, I am very happy with the outcome of these (output, not looks). I still need to aim them, still need to get the high beams back in, etc. But this is good for the moment. I'll edit this all later with specific info, but here are the photos I took during the install:

Okay, the uptick of the cutoff is really bugging me out. I'm going to take these apart this weekend and adjust the cutoff. I want it flatter like my MH1's. Comparison...

Morimoto MH1 in my Jeep:

Hella 60mm in my Trans Am:

Once I modify the cutoff shield I'll take new cutoff photos as well as ground shots. My brackets for the final mounting should be here this week or early next week. That will clean up everything for the high and low and make it look like a stock setup!

I was going to make a kit for the 4th Gen LT1 Camaro's when I had my LT1 Z28, but I just did the 1 kit and installed it myself. Currently, BLS is the only decent kit out there for them. I'm sure I could do it for less, but that's time and tools I don't currently have unfortunately.

Mmhmm. It's tempting to work on something. I have an account with Hella so I could get the parts super cheap, but the labor to go into making it since I don't have a lathe, etc., would be fairly expensive. If I could make a bracket to at least mount the Hella projectors into stock housings I'm sure I could sell that for a good amount.

Saw this on Tech. Looks good but definitely need to do something to finish them off. Most of the pictures with the plates are always head on but my guess is they look pretty awkward from any side angle. Performance looks good though.

I think they'll look great once I get the plates on AND put the stock shroud back in. Will look similar to this (But with high beams):

Not my photos (Tram on LS1Tech), but I edited them to be brighter so you can see how it'll look:

I may be able to box them somewhat to have them fill the OE space a bit better. I'll play with that one I get the brackets.

As for the cut off, they shouldn't be flat. All oem HIDs are dropped lower on the drivers side of the light output.

Social Networks:

i was never really a fan of the "bug eyes" light looks(#sorryadam) the way BLS's lights came out is exactly what i would want if i was in the market for a LT1 projector.

Yep, I'm a huge Jeep and lighting whore. I've had 6 Jeeps (YJ, XJ, YJ, XJ, TJ, ZJ in that order) and have worked for a Jeep aftermarket parts company out here in PA for the past 7 years. I love my job!

This is my Jeep retro - step by step:
http://ls1tech.com/forums/multimedia...t-ta-next.html

You can basically retro those projectors into any non-sealed beam housing that is large enough to fit them (they're pretty small). This can and has been done on CJ, YJ, TJ, XJ, JK, ZJ, WJ, WK, etc. Amazing cutoff, perfect uptick on the cutoff as well. Lots of light.

V, I'm aware Been doing retro's and tinkering with lights for 13 years Look at the end of my first post with the Jeep cutoff versus the the Trans Am. For my Jeep I have HID projectors. The 60mm Hella's are halogen projectors, hence the really steep uptick. To resolve this I am going to dremel the cutoff shield so it's closer to what the Jeep looks like. Will turn out very well I hope. I've done it in the past.
