AIR/Smog Pump about to go?
I have another thread going on "strange cold starts" where after the cold start the RPM's drop to 800 briefly then go back to 1100-1200 for cold idle (issue started 2 years ago). I still have this issue and just recently noticed the dash lights "dim" a little right when the RPM's drop to 800, the same time I hear the AIR pump turn on.
Now here's the strange thing -- I never blew a fuse for the AIR pump nor did I ever get a SES light. Other than the RPM drop, I don't hear anything abnormal (the AIR pump still has that hi-pitch whine). Also on a "cold engine" if I turn the key (without starting), I hear the fuel pump prime followed by a slight "pop" and then turn off the key I do not hear a "whistle" (like I do when I turn it off on a "warm engine"). I did have that AIR pump recall done back in late 2000 (supposed to prevent corrosion or something).
I guess I can try replacing the underhood relay to see if that fixes the issue but I have a feeling I may need to replace the actual pump. Does anyone know the part# and where I can find one (if it has to be AC Delco, because I know I can get remanufactured units from Advance or Autozone)?

My lights dim and come back immediately when the pump kicks on too but the rpm's don't drop. I think its just the initial draw when the pump kicks on

Would've done that....but mine's a 97 with OBD2 so unfortunately that's not an option for me (I know it can be tuned out so the light won't turn on, but I still need to pass emissions).

It only works on a cold start anyway. If you delete it and have it removed in the tune you will be fine. They don't even open the hood on OBDII cars. And I doubt they know what to look for anyway. The only thing they are looking for with the cameras is cats

If a good tuner is someone who can check and uncheck boxes, well that is just a silly statement.

Does anyone know what the "pop" noise is after I turn the key? I hear it right after the fuel pump prime on a cold engine (when I turn the key to ON position but don't start engine).
Wondering if that's related to my strange cold startup (I don't hear the pop on a warm engine). Although today I did hear the AIR pump kick in after starting a warm engine (no rpm drop however)...

OBD1 cars have to pass the sniffer test. OBD2 cars do not. so OP shall be fine since he is OBD2 (96+)

He is a 97, which means, OBD2 last time I checked.
So, readiness tests.
