reputation has a lot to do with what car people buy, this is true. if it was so easy to win people back, GM, Ford and Chrysler would have already done it. the only way to get people back to american cars is to educate them. ask 10 people where their money goes after the purchase and 9 of them don't know or don't care. if they know that one car equals ten jobs for americans, their point of view adjusts. that is, if they care about anyone other than themselves. that also has a lot to do with what kind of car people buy - how ego-centric are they, exactly? if they found out that their buying decision affected people's dinner tables, would it make a difference?

part of the problem is the government actually. our government follows a foreign policy that gives the advantage to other countries because apparently our economy is infallible and it is our duty to help others. countries like japan protect only their economy and will not allow import, but do large amounts of export. we do the opposite. this is good for other countries, but bad for us. we suck

to back you up...me being a mechanic, I haven't seen a foreign car at my job with more than 200,000 miles. Where as an American car, I've seen at least 5-10 in the last 2-3 months. Especially those 3100 series made by GM. Those f'n things seems to last forever.

eh my friend has a 93 civic with 250k and another friend has a 95 passat with over 200k that he daily commutes to philly with and races at the track.........i had a 93 silverado with 150k that was dieing.
its the individual car, and the individual owner that will determine the reliability of a car, not the nameplate on the bumpers.

for the most part, yes. but not entirely. some cars have known trouble spots. VWs and all german cars for that matter have electrical problems, fords have transmission problems, hondas have weak axles and auto trannys, etc.... some cars, no matter how well you treat them, there are some problems you can't avoid.
but mike you're right, the biggest factor is the driver. i would be surprised if this saturn i'm driving cuts 100k with my driving habits.
