I was there, but fighting traction all day. The Kuhmo's don't like the cold. I wasn't expection miracles, but holy hockey pucks. It was brutal. I didn't stay for 2nd set of runs in the late afternoon, thinking it was only going to get colder. Luckily I worked first thing, then raced 2nd so my work requirement was filled early.

Anyway, with ambient air temps in the low 40's and winds howling at 15mph or so, ice in the lot (not in the racing line, but in the same lot) and traction no where to be found, I made my first run and spun the wheels hard on take off (drag strip style launch probably wasn't the best idea under the conditions) and for the first 200 feet felt like I was on ice. Once I got the car rolling not too bad, but still was pushing from lack of grip up front and could have brought the @ss around at will if I wanted to. All of these actions led to a 54.something.

Second run, backed off on the launch and came out easy, but still got squirley at the first set of gates when I tried to bring the power on. Again, once I got rolling things improved and ran a 52.something.

Third run, I thought I backed off even more but then turned the gas pedal into a light switch and promptly spun the thing just past the second set of gates, stayed on course , but looped it. The looooong slow variety. Result, 59.something.

Fourth run, by now I am completely unsure how to get off the line and make it throught the first couple hundred feet, so slow and smooth led to a 53.something.

I talked with Echomirage real quick and he seemed to be having similiar issues, no traction at all.

All in all, given the condtions a decent day. I have much to learn on shock tuning, air pressure adj. etc. etc. etc. Left with a smile though and tires didn't rub anywhere so all is good.

See ya Sunday, hopefull conditions will be more favorable. I honestly think I could have done better on street tires or on my old set of RA-1's. The kuhmo's just didn't get hot enough to off the grip they are capable of.

what kumhos? v710?
temps this sunday should be in 50's so i hope my v710's will hold.
yes, in those cold temps, a good aggressive street tire like my falken azenis 615 would probably be better than some R comps.
The lime green Porsche (race class) 924 with 968 motor, $7k shocks and national winner/driver GJ ran a 47.5 with Toyo Proxes 888 to set FTD. The owner of the car ran low 48's but he took all his runs in a row so that was unfair heat in tires and was only allowed because its non-points event (from what I hear).

I think sometimes you can start in 2nd gear at the start in slick conditions.

I thought something was a little funny. I worked the first shift in the morning and he seemed to be running like every 5 minutes or so....Oh well. No big deal.

I was on the v710's. A second gear start didn't even occur to me at the time, I'll have to add that to the tool box.

I just thought the green Porsche was a 2 driver deal, but he did seem to be out there an awful lot. Practice, so no big deal. It's not like I was gonna track him down anyway. Have times been posted? I checked, but didn't see anything. Non-points event so maybe they decided not to?

See ya Sunday.

i wasn't there so hard for me to judge too but it was a 2 driver car so it would seem like he kept taking lots of runs in a row. was it as often in the afternoon too?

I don't know? I didn't work in the afternoon. It was probably just that it was a 2-driver car. I know on one run he got red-flagged because of a dangerous situation on course, so that netted him a re-run.

That brings me to another point. The way the course was set up, there was the potential for two cars to be going head to head with out much separation and it brought out the red flag 3 or 4 times in the first session. Partly due to new drivers getting lost on course, partly due to course layout, partly due to the timing in which the cars were being released from the line, partly due to course workers "spectating" a bit, but definitely something for everyone to consider in the future and be more aware of. It was the first day out this season so I think that too was a contributing factor.

Here's hoping for sunny and 60 on Sunday

I worked the second mourning shift...the porsche probably had a good 12 runs in when i worked .....he was just going again after finishing a lap, but it was so cold out..it probably didn't do much for the tires.

here are a couple of vids from the inside of my cobalt. First auto x, first time duct taping a vid camera to my seat, so there not that good.
