Back when my v6 failed inspection 3... or was it 4?... times for loud exhuast, I had the cops in my town dig through every book and they found no decible limit. Unless that has changed in the past couple years...

thanks for the replys

See my issue here is that this was a cop in the town where i live...normally i would just eat the ticket and be on with my life but i can't risk getting hassled constantly.

I'll probably just pay this one and argue with the next cop that trys it. And if its the same cop as last time then so be it, im not getting pushed around.

Yes it can. You can piss the cop off enough to give you more tickets.

First off, no cop, no where, has the right to pull anyone over for bs. Thats the end.
The rule states that an aftermarket exhaust cannot exceed 95db's in accordance to SAE rules of testing.
I dont care if this is 2am or 2pm, him standing at a stop sign sure as hell didnt pull a loud enough noise for the cop to go "OH MAN THATS TOOOO LOUD!!"
Its ********, and I would file a greviance against him with the police department. Mail it to the head of police, mail it to the mayor, and one to yourself and do not open it. You now have a record of it, and very possible that if that same cop pulls you over again for this same instance or something else that is on the cusp of ********, you can move foward with possible legal action.
Nothing was being done, no law was being broken, it was nothing but a revenue maker for them.

For what? Knowing your rights? Knowing the law? Making him look like a big dick at 2am?

Amen BigAl..i was a boy scout so i say be prepared. if you dont attempt to know ur rights, the cops aint gonna help you're defense...only stiffle it with their BS. stick it to the man who sticks you. know your rights and defend them. carry a copy of that law. I probably will from here on out too.

You guys have to be kidding me. You honestly think it's a good idea to tell a cop how to do his job?

I know firsthand that you will piss some cops off if you do that (if not most). I was in my buddy's 2000 Z28 when we got pulled over with a "loud exhaust" in Maryland. We had an electronically calibrated decibel meter in the car which we tried to use to prove our case. That really pissed the guy off and we were hassled for a while as he went over every square inch of the car looking for stuff to write us on. He ended up not finding anything but it was a royal pain in the balls.

Your mileage may vary, of course. But I wouldn't take that chance.

Is it a good idea? I dunno, depends on how much enjoyment you will get out of it.
Your story made me smile. You pulled it out, you proved him that he was abusing his power, he walked around your friends car trying to find something, and nothing happend. So he walked away all upset, shut down, and realized that you made him look like the biggest douche?
And you didnt get a half-chub from that? I would be ALL smiles. Ill take some hassle if all that is gunna happen is him get all bent out of shape, work like a dog trying to find something, and then walk back to his car. Then he has to answer to his/her boss why they pulled someone over and no tickets were given. The cop had to be there for 10-20 mins more then it had to be, which is just eating up time he could be nailing some guy doing 100 in a school zone.
Cops like that give GOOD cops a bad image.

You're wrong at the very beginning of your argument. Cops can pull you over for suspicion of anything. Then if they find any kind of violation it will just add up quicker. Sitting for an extended period of time at a stop sign is suspicious by itself. Loud exhaust could be the sign of a defective exhaust system which is enough reason to be pulled over as well. Do you have tint? That's another reason. Taillight out? Talking on the cell phone? etc. Arguing with a cop is the dumbest thing you can do. Argue it in court. Prove you're right in court, you can't prove it out on the street without a judge around. Or, don't do things that can get you pulled over. And stop talking trash about cops, you guys sound like a bunch of crybabies.

Yeah, cops can and do, but they shouldnt. So he was at a stop sign for a second longer then most people would. But then again, most people dont stop at a stop sign, so I guess damned if you do, damned if you dont.
There were no laws broken where there?
Is there a statute on the books that says you must come to a stop sign and wait no more then 10 seconds unles traffic is coming?
No, no laws were being broken. The cop just wanted to bust balls. Thats all. And on top of this, he gave a bogus ticket to a young kid in a sports car.

Let's see, someone sitting at a stop sign for an extended period of time at 2am. I wonder if any drug sales go on in cars idling at a stop sign or the side of the road? Or it could be somebody looking for a prostitute, they tend to walk over to cars that are sitting idle at stop signs or pull up to a curb. It was totally suspicious that he was sitting there like that. I would prefer the cops check out that scenario as opposed to driving by and ignoring it. It has nothing to do with a young kid in a sports car, it's the situation. And I wish the cops would give some of the fart pipe idiots in my neighborhood tickets for loud exhaust because they are totally obnoxious and way too loud(like the Loudmouth) and wake people up in the middle of the night. There should be noise laws against that. Don't get me started on motorcycles, that's the most ridiculous thing in the world that they get away with open pipes.
