The first car I painted was a city bus I converted in to a motorhome... I've done a bunch of priming, sealing, painting and surfacing on my 46 Dodge panel truck. I did the first paint on my "57 Camaro" but learned my lesson and paid a good painter $400 to pull the trigger while I did the prep and masking. His experience and skill was well worth $400. I learned a lot about paint by talking to experts. I know what to do but don't have a good enough touch to pull the trigger right every time. Maybe if I painted another dozen cars I would...

Charlie.

Ummm I'm not looking to start any wars here but $400 in materials is cheap materials. They may look good right out of the gun but most likely won't hold up over time. They'll fade and possibly even crack or yellow on you.
Also if you were using PPG DP Epoxy Primer I believe it tells you right in the instruction manual that you cannot put basecoat right over it....but I could be mistaken.

Unless you reduce it and use it as a sealer coat over the non reduced DP..

i vote blue with white stripe.

and just to touch base about materials cost again quick... I am a very amateur painter and i painted the engine compartment of my SS(not even firewall) and my lower airbox, and had just enough left over to paint a 4th gen hatch(not that big, lol) And those materials cost me in the high $300 range($375 i think). It was all PPG products. If i had to paint a whole car... figure 4-5 times that easily($1500-$1875) and thats NOT including sanding products, compounds to rub it out, masking tape, etc... so add on at least another 150. So you're now looking at $1650-$2000 just for Quality materials and supplies... Yes you can buy cheaper products but lifespan and protection to the elements may suffer. If i decide to paint my Jimmy or Blazer, i may use paint from Summit Racing, and pay only a couple hundred for everything, but i dont expect those finishes to hold up as well.
