Need Advice IMPORTANT

When I installed the new fuel pump, the wire harness did not match so I had to cut and solder the wires that run the pump motor. Everything was done very clean and there was no sharp edges on the solder job. I sealed the soldered ends with shrink wrap tubing.

I got thinking about the shrink wrap...Can gasoline eat away the shrink wrap? if the shrink wrap deteriorates enough on both soldered wires, there is a possibility they may touch and arc. Spark in a tank of gas = bad.

I have had some of the shrink wrap sitting in a cup of gas for 3 days now without any change, but Im still looking for feedback.

Help/Am I going to die?

Spark in gas is fine. Spark in an empty tank is bad.

So, keep a full tank of gas, all the time. :0

Do you know what kind of shrinkwrap you used?

And I am always trying to tell you not to half ass ****... now your gonna blow yourself up...

It wasnt half assed, I didnt get the right harness with the pump. The LS1 fuel pump and assembly is different from yours...the section that has the soldered wires is in the top 4" of the tank, so it wont be submerged unless I have close to a full tank.

nothing to worry about,
a spark will not happen nor will it arc. unless you have a loose connection. thats when a arc will happen.

now if you were gonna have the pump armed and have your hands in the tank tapping the 2 leads together than thats a different story.

you won't blow up, so no worries. and if the shrink wrap was gonna melt or deteriate it would have started the process rather quickly (within a few minutes)

Ok I feel a little better after reading his write up...then again that was posted not too long ago.

He is going to die 3 months before me.

from what i've read, shrink wrap is made of plastic polymers and so are gas cans.

so in conclusion i say you should be fine.

although now that i think about it, is possible it could melt off b/c of hot wires?

plastic polymer is a very broad classification of materials. The molecular structure of a gas tank and a shrinkable plastic is different.

I really doubt the shrink wrap would melt due to heat. The wires are the same size and there should be negligible resistance at the soldered connection to create heat.

However, you bring up a good point; the wires in the fuel pump assembly and from the kit were probably designed for stock voltage. I think Im going to reconnect my hot wire kit from the alternator to the battery.

Here are the different types of heat shrink tubing and their properties:
