Bill to Provide for Single License Plate Introduced in New Jersey
Bill to Provide for Single License Plate Introduced in New Jersey
Legislation (S.B. 629) has been introduced in the New Jersey State Senate to require the issuance of only a single license plate for motor vehicles. The bill, favored by state hobbyists, requires that the single registration plate be attached on the rear of the vehicle.
We Urge You to Contact Members of the Senate Transportation Committee (Contact Info Below) Immediately to Request Support for S.B. 629 - S.B. 629 would save money, conserve resources and bring New Jersey in line with other states that have moved to a single plate requirement.
- S.B. 629 allows owners who were issued two license plates prior to the enactment and effective date of the bill to return one of the plates to the Motor Vehicle Commission.
- S.B. 629 would protect the aesthetic contours of collector cars and relieve vehicle owners of the burden of having to create mounting holes on some original bumpers.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee immediately to request their support for S.B. 629
Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.

I suspect everyone in this club ought to email the officials mentioned above and tell them how much you support this and that you are a registered NJ voter.

Can you come up with a "canned" letter or something? I am worthless at writing stuff that sounds good. I am totally up for doing it though, just would like to say more than "Please support S.B. 629"

I agree with a letter that we can all send because I too am lousy at writing formal letters.

I can try later in the week, but if someone else can maybe step up and wordsmith a canned individual response that includes all the issues currently in question that would be great.

I could write a letter, just wanted to clarify this little bit of info -

I found this info here - http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Inspections/advisory.htm
So based on the quote above, would it be safe to assume that you only need one license plate to pass inspection? If so, then it should be a slam dunk to get this law passed.

Yes, an advisory means you pass inspection but you could get pulled over and ticketed for not correcting the condition(s) before driving on a public road.

That's what I assumed. Since driving without a front plate is only a ticketable offense at best, there ~should~ be no issues, other than lazy peeps in Trenton. I'll write a letter that we can all copy and forward to our reps.

Wonder if the fact that motorcycles only have 1 plate. Will help any. Considering if a motorcycle only needs 1 why does a car need 2 ?

OK, here's what I've come up with. Hopefully this looks good to you guys - if not, lets hear some ideas on what to change.
Quote:
Dear Senator,
I am writing to you today to ask for your support of S.B. 629. This is the bill that would require the issuance of only a single, rear-mounted license plate for
motor vehicles. As an automobile enthusiast and lifetime resident of New Jersey, I applaud the Transportation Committee for trying to get this bill passed. S.B. 629 would save money, conserve resources and bring New Jersey in line with 19 other states that have moved to a single plate requirement, including our neighbors Pennsylvania and Delaware. S.B. 629 would also allow owners who were issued two license plates prior to the enactment and effective date of the bill to return one of the plates to the Motor Vehicle Commission, and it would protect the aesthetic contours of vintage and collector cars and relieve vehicle owners of the burden of having to create mounting holes on some original bumpers.
In addition, under the new inspection guidelines which were enacted in 2010, a motor vehicle can even pass inspection at a state or private facility with an Advisory notice as long as one undamaged license plate is present. And motorcycles registered in New Jersey are only required to have a rear-facing license plate. I hope that you can fight to have S.B. 629 passed and enacted into law.
Sincerely,
|

so it is only a ticketable offense and not technically against the law in New Jersey

I'm not sure this reads correctly. I don't know if it is a law though but it is certainly a municipal offense. I think a little more research and clarification is necessary there. Rest looks good to me.

Good point...and I'm not sure how to exactly find out that information. I could ask a few cops that I know to get their opinion on the law. Anyway, I rewrote that sentence a bit, how's this look now?

Cool, I didn't realize you could pass at a private facility with a warning also. I will make another edit for those that wanna copy/paste the letter.
