tapping..

ok so as some of you know my motor has a little 'tapping' coming from the top end. Happens when its cold, then quiets for a little bit then when the motor is at operating temperature it comes back and its noticeable at all rpms.

lifters and cam have all of 1k on them. oil is full and still clear. its coming from the drivers side cyl 3/5. there is no power loss or anything, ive adjusted them several times and using stock rockers. this problem was there with the old cam/lifters so they were replaced but its still there.

Im thinking the moron who cleaned the block didnt do a good job and a oil passage is restricted or something. if no one has any ideas im just gonna wait and beat it up til it blows and get a 350 and be done with it. haha

try taking a screwdriver and probing around listening for the noise through the end of it. should help narrow it down to top end or bottom end.

its top end. already did that trick. the motor was down 2 quarts of oil as well, its better now but when its hot its still a very loud ticking/tapping. i only put 600ish miles on the oil change this summer.

havent pulled the cover yet... its a pita because of the alt clearance (have to disconnect alt/batt) im really not expecting much under it because last time it was ticking everything was fine and the valves were tight. the noise did go away for about 100 miles then it came back.

Did you check your pushrods before reinstall?

Did you roll test them on a flat surface...sheet of glass, etc.? Hard to check for bent pushrods visually otherwise.

Bent pushrods cause ticking noise. They flex and unload the lifter.

If you have a trashed rocker that will cause noise also. Worn out trunnion, or galled surface at the valvestem contact patch.

yes i did the roll test to all of them. they are chromoly if that makes a difference. the builder put them in because he wanted the motor to be bullet proof, it also has chromoly piston rings. not sure on the internals, stock i think or at least stock style.

you can hear the tapping on the drivers side. mind you this is the quietest it gets, and this is after adding 2 quarts of oil and the car being warm, not hot.
