Lt1 camshaft stuff
max lift you can do with a stock motor before you run into coil bind problems is in the .500-.510 range right?

Um, on what springs?
Or do you just mean un modified heads with stockish valve setup?
And or, I believe stock spider for lifters may run into trouble if you run a radical cam with keeping lifters in check...

Oh, good luck...
I would remove stock cam, and then stick it back in.

so then why can you do 1.6 rockers on a stock engine with stock springs if it can handle zero additional lift?

Its not advised. And if you have any substantial amount of miles on your springs, you are playing with fire.

Running 1.6s on the stock springs is NOT worth the risk. Are you familiar with the term "coil bind?"

springs are cheap enough, might as well do it right then do it half assed and end up broken.

And to be that guy for you Joe(not you ramair) I did run comp magnums on stock springs for a few hundred miles, but my car had less than 75k on it at that point and I rarely if ever hit WOT when the car was stockish.
I still would not advise it. If you want cheap insurance pick up a hot cam kit, comes with cam, rockers, springs, and retainers.
Even then, unless you really want a cheap cam setup I would not advise that. But its your car, do as you will.

I am just assuming he is a newb and wants the easiest cheapest way to install a cam, which the LT4 hot cam kit provides.

Never said it was "good".... The LT4 springs are marginally better than stockers, and as said before, the whole kit is pretty cheap...

What everyone is saying ( and not too clearly ) is that the stock springs are only made to handle the lift of a stock cam. The springs are close to coil bind right from the factory and @ .500 lift you can see ciol bind. ( stock cam is 36x lift). adding 1.6 rockers could cause coil bind. Even a baby cam such as the 502 could cause problems.
You are basically forced to change springs with any cam / rocker install.
If your on a tight budget, look at a Hotcam package.

well i didnt really think this thread was gonna go this far but basically, my engine is pretty much shot (blown headgaskets due to overheating) and im taking it out in the next few weeks. once its out i'll be taking it to the machine shop to start building it.
meanwhile, im getting a good deal on a junkyard motor for cheap with alot less miles and a 6 month unlimited mile warantee. i figured since the motor will be out maybe i should just throw a cam in just to entertain myself and to help prevent rushing the new motor to get done.
doing the cam only swap is really only worth it in my case if the cam is littereally all i had to buy which is why im being so cheap about it. i guess for now i'll just have to deal with the stock motor and just enjoy the fact that it'll be useable again

Read your warranty. I'll bet that it will be void if you crack it open and change the cam. Then if it breaks (more like when, based on your cam choice and that it's a junkyard motor) you will have two engines that need work.
