Catalytic Converter Questions...

I need to put a cat on my car (the fumes are killing my wife LOL) and am wondering if anyone has an opinion on the Catco vs. Magnaflow vs. Walker cat?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTO-9143/?rtype=10

vs. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-93440/?rtype=10

and http://www.amazon.com/Walker-15618-C...8322284&sr=1-1

To my eye, it looks like the Catco may flow best, but is there any proof one way or the other? I know Magnaflow has a good rep as well, and price-wise they're all pretty close. I just don't want to lose too much power.

BTW, these are all replacement '84-'85 Vette cats; overall length is the same and the flange is the same as my Monte, but they typically stay at 3" all the way through, instead of shrinking down to 2.5" like some Monte replacement cats.

I think they are all the same. Get the walker, check rockauto for pricing & use our discount code. Also check there for rebates. when i did the exhaust in my truck, they had walker rebates for the cat and for the dynomax catback setup, which made that cheaper than stock replacements.

what is the rest of your system like?

after 2.5 years I finally put cats on my car 2 days ago, it sounds sooo much nicer and doesn't smell anymore. I never minded the smell but others weren't crazy about it hahah. would have done it a long time ago if I knew it would sound this much more smooth and toned.

I have coated Edelbrock TES headers with their y-pipe, and a Hooker 2.5" split cat-back system -

What is the discount code for Rockauto?

Edit: I found it!

I wound up ordering the Walker cat, looks almost exactly the same as the Catco but cheaper since they have the rebate for $30 off any Walker product through 10/31.

Oh, FWIW, the Dynomax catback I bought for my Cherokee fit like a glove, and since Walker = Dynomax I feel confident this one will fit great. Now I just have to make sure I have two more cat gaskets in the garage LOL. Thanks again for all of the opinions guys!

Well, I went to put on my new cat yesterday, and apparently my test pipe is 1/4" shorter than the cat. I dunno how that happened, I guess my buddy cut/measured it wrong when he welded it up. So I need to unbolt the Y-pipe where it goes into the mufflers, then readjust the whole system to fit the new cat. FML.

It looks great though -

OK, so the new cat is on!! Now, here's the next question - how many miles do I have to put on it before it stops smelling funny? I drove it about 10 miles today (local roads, no highway speeds) and it still stinks.

Heheh, thanx Scott! I did drive it down to my wife's parents to pick up some arancini (Google if you don't know what they are) and the smell is almost gone now! Car is running just as good as before, maybe a tad quieter, but much cleaner. Tree hugging FTW.

Thanks Steve! I hope so too, it fit well once I adjusted the rear pipes and seems to be a real quality piece.
