cooling fan question

ok, i have dual electric fans...

how necessary are both of them? lol as in could i remove one and replace it with say and aftermarket pusher fan in front of the radiator?

reason i ask is because i need the extra clearence between the motor and the rad on the drivers side and that large stock dual fan setup is in the way.

so can i switch one of the oem ones for a pusher? swap out the stock dual for a larger single aftermarket puller? or what else?

pusher fans are not as efficient and can cause more harm than good. AC important? maybe switch to a ford taurus/mk8 fan, although you'll likely need to fab up a shroud.

what car is this for?

I believe that the pusher style is less effective, however if the cooling system is kept in good shape, I don't think switching from 2 pullers to one push / one pull will hurt you. I imagine that one of the fans is a secondary that only kicks on with the AC or if the engine gets very hot.

Freeing up some space in the engine bay of the V, huh?

i assume 1 of the 2 fans is an A/C secondary, and thats the one id switch to a puller. I have no problem switching to a larger single puller fan.

and yes, this is for the V, and yea, need some extra room up front... lol

a pusher can impeded air flow. I'd look into the ford fan. after market fans suck, and I assume what ever you are doing to this car will generate more heat, not less.

i would put the pusher fan on the front side of where the puller was, not in front of the stock puller id be keeping, but that aside, i have no trouble switching to a ford type fan or such. I can easily fab a shroud.

and yes the mods will make more heat, and i will most likely switch to an electric waterpump(ie borrow the one off the SS)

Take a look at the Procharger F-body cooling fan setup. It uses the larger primary fan and I think you can put a smaller secondary fan in that might give the extra room.

I think a 2 speed ford fan is the better option. I'd do that before bothering with a pusher fan.

Cooling Fan Control - Two Fan System
The engine cooling fan system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the engine control module (ECM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans and fan relays receive battery positive voltage from the underhood fuse block. The ground path is provided at G104.

During low speed operation, the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed fan relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the low speed fan relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the low fan fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the left cooling fan. The ground path for the left cooling fan is through the cooling fan s/p relay and the right cooling fan. The result is a series circuit with both fans running at low speed.

During high speed operation the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed fan relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. After a 3 second delay, the ECM supplies a ground path for the high speed fan relay and the cooling fan s/p relay through the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the cooling fan s/p relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and provides a ground path for the left cooling fan. At the same time the high speed fan relay coil is energized closing the relay contacts and provides battery positive voltage from the high fan fuse on the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the right cooling fan. During high speed fan operation, both engine cooling fans have there own ground path. The result is a parallel circuit with both fans running at high speed.

The ECM commands the low speed cooling fans ON under the following conditions:

* Engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 94.5°C (202°F) .
* A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1447 kPa (210 psi) .
* After the vehicle is shut OFF if the engine coolant temperature at key-off is greater than 101°C (214°F) the low speed fans will run for a minimum of 60 seconds After 60 seconds, if the coolant temperature drops below 101°C (214°F) the fans will shut OFF. The fans will automatically shut OFF after 3 min. regardless of coolant temperature.

The ECM commands the high speed fans ON under the following conditions:

* Engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 104.25°C (220°F) .
* A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds approximately 1824 kPa (265 psi) .
* When certain DTC's set.

At idle and very low vehicle speeds the cooling fans are only allowed to increase in speed if required. This insures idle stability by preventing the fans from cycling between high and low speed.
i think you are going to piss off your car. if anything, i'd switch the stock fan to a pusher in front of the rad/condenser. i think its going to be a roll with the punches kinda project.

you can make a 2 speed ford fan work with that.

IIRC at high speed when the ecm is not turning the fans on. pusher = air flow blocker. Look at the packaging OEs use under hoods today - rare is the pusher fan. Gotta be a reason to waste that space.

a manual fan switch in a cts-v is an epic hack level fail. i tend to agree with you but paul has never cared if the car hates him, lol.

but yea, i can find a way to make the car not know whats going on, like yank guts of the stock fans, leave motors just connected and tuck away off to the side then run a sep. fan setup with relays off the stockers to prevent amp draw, or a new temp switch in the heads just for new fans. A lot can be done. My my point though, is i need the room down there.

it runs through relays the ecm has no sense of power draw from the fans. there is no reason not to use the ecm control if you have electric fans. ford 2 speed fan, 3 relays (2 of which need to be upgraded) is your ticket.

There's a lot of aftermarket puller fans that are pretty low profile. What's the thickest fan you can run in that space?

get a ford fan and push it all the way to the RH side. the fans are cheap enough and resellable.

what are you doing that sits between the fans & the engine? and what will you do for a center section once you shatter 2 or 3?

I would definitely put it in the fender well. Just have a bracket made up to put it off to the side.
