Why are catch cans so expensive?
I'm shopping for a PCV catch can for my '04 LS1 and I'm kinda surprised at the prices some of them are going for. I expected like 100 bucks or so, but some are reaching almost $250. Its a can to catch oil vapor.. not add any power.
Anyways, does anyone have a specific recommendation? I'm currently leaning towards one from elite engineering, for like $159. I don't need any special colors, just want black, and I don't want any fancy steel braided hoses, oem rubber style is fine.
The reason I want/need one is that my high mileage is putting a tad too much oil through my intake. Recently, my TPS sensor failed and when I unplugged the connector, oil started leaking out through the plug. so yea, oil got behind the TB and past the throttle shaft seals and into the sensor itself. I cleaned everything up and a new sensor will be here tomorrow, but Id like to prevent it from happening again, so, a catch can is needed(at least until an engine rebuild).

I was in the same boat as you. They seem way more expensive than they have to be.
I run a $30 amazon can and a $12 moroso can mount on my car and it does the job fine.

Im assuming like all things there are different levels of quality with them...
I didnt even have one on my camaro now that I think about it, but I do have a real nice one that Dave @ EFX got me in my vette

I used this from amazon $30 for my oil burning 2010prius (kids car)
Dromedary Universal Aluminum Polish Baffled Oil Catch Can Reservoir Tank Black
Vinyl tubes are junk, I bought the fiber re-enforced ones. Then use some stainless steel scrubs as a baffle.

This is the same thing i did. i think its the same can, i just painted my wrinkle black to match the other stuff.

Thats's cheap, wait until you get into the import stuff for STI and the like. Cobb / IAG have some nice systems that heat the oil to evaporate the moisture and then let the oil drain into the engine. These go for around 450. Its a nice setup for cars that generate high crankcase pressures. Smartass answer is to build a tighter engine, however with clearances needed for the high revving boost, you will gererate blowby. Perhaps its the pankcake design. Some of these are at 40 psi boost if not higher. Base/ light modified ones (500 hp +/- level ) are low - mid 20's psi.

ok well, new TPS sensor is in and fixed the high idle issue, but when changing it today, I already saw more oil where I cleaned yesterday and I only drove like 10 miles since. So either I have major blow-by, or the TB throttle shaft seal/bearing are shot.
Anyways, I'm going to start looking for another block to build in the meantime as well as a newer TB for when the motor gets swapped. Until then, I think i'm going to get the elite can. Its got a bunch of GTO user recommendations.

I went the ultra cheap route on my old 4Runner turbo. I think it was actually a fuel filter for some vehicle but it did work to stop oil vapors from getting sucked into the turbo.

In the past few days, I've read more about pcv systems then I care to know. Based on all that, I did buy the elite can.
Seems impossible to find a good block for a fair price, so eventually I may try to just find a wrecked car complete and use the motor. Or I can pull the current motor and build it over the winter.
