1970 RS Project

I've been working on my Camaro for the last several years and am now at the stage where I can go out and have some fun with it. Still have to do the body and paint. Probably this winters project.
Car consists of a mildly built 350, full Hotchkis suspension, Kore-3 C-5 Corvette brakes, 18" wheels & BF Goodrich KDW tires, and a bunch of other goodies.

Thanks guy's, It's been a lot of fun building this car.
Here's a picture of the interior the day I got it and what it looks like now.





Upgrades include an complete rewire of the entire car. It now hosts a modern fuse box complete with wiring for power windows, power seats, seat warmers, modern 3-way retrackable seat belts, and a Vintage Air A/C unit that fits snuggly under the dash. An Ididit 6 way adjustable steering column, Momo steering wheel, and NRG quick release hub. Plus enough Dynamat sound deadening material to complete that new car feel.

Thanks BigAls87Z28 and yes I made it myself.
I have had several 70 Camaro's before and the one thing I've always hated was how much the center consoles always creaked and groaned when you lean on them. Plus I was looking for a way to improve my welding skills. So I started out making the frame to be very solid once it was bolted in.
Then I brushed the top sheetmetal and cleared it, made the sides, padded and upolstered them, fit some cup holders and used a Lokar billet trim ring and shifter. This was actually my first attempt at welding or fabricating any kind of sheetmetal.

I've been working on modifing the inner fender and fender lip to accomadate my tire & wheel setup. When I hit a dip in the highway the tire contacts the lip of the fender well. Not really diggin that. I was going to change the wheels for a bigger back space but I really like the wheels and the way the car sits. So time to start cutting & welding.

Started with the fenders first. There is about an inch wide lip in the wheel well that needed to be bend back.



A few cuts and it folded up pretty easy. Just have to weld up the cut lines and good as new.



I left about a 1/4" on the fender so I have picked up 3/4" already. Then I went onto the inner fender and cut out the piece I want to raise up.
I actually cut out one more inch up into the inner fender after I took this photo. This will be the section that I square off to get 2 additional inches of vertical wheel travel.
Should end up with plenty of wheel room.



Well, I got the passenger inner fender done today. Now I just have to weld up the inner fender lip and that side is done. Then onto the drivers side. Should get done quicker now that I have an idea of what I want to do.

Both sides all done and everything back together. Weather was 70 degrees today so I went for a nice long highway blast today.
Looking for every dip in the road I could find and no rubbing. I didn't want the ride to end. Probably one of the last nice weekends left, maybe one more cruise tomorrow.

I definitely think this was one of the best investments I made.
A NRG quick release hub and Momo steering wheel. Makes working under the dash much easier plus it looks cool.

I have driven a couple of times at night now and 1970 headlight technology is just not up to what I am used to anymore.
So it's time to step up to some LED headlights. I have looked at several and one of the best seems to be these Trucklite LED headlights. They are a direct plug in to the stock connecters and they seem to fit into the original headlight buckets. A bit pricey, but I think me and my families safety is worth it.

Stielow is using those in the new car.

I'm using some simple hella lenses with iirc h3 bulbs, and relays. They are just as good as most cars out there for about $100 total. Relays are key, a lot of resistance in the circuit, you end up with like 10.5 volts at the bulb.

His build was the 2nd Camaro I saw these on. From what I have read you don't need a relay with the Trucklites.
Thanks for another option though. I will have to investigate more.
