tranny swap thread

Date is TBA depending on when I get my torque converter. It will be a weekend deal up by me, (SmokingSS volunteered... he has air tools) though.

What method should be used... jack it up, get 4752759823452 extentions and swivels and just remove the tranny and TC... or drop the k-member and go that route? I'm kinda thinking k-member will be easier simply because getting to the top 2 bolts is a major bitch and a half (then again, maybe taking them out before dropping the tranny crossmember will work?)

Let's rack our brains here... what else should i get for the swap?

Tranny
TC
ATF fluid
swapping driveshaft
my tranny mount and TA mount are both fine
if we leave the k-member in, would it be easy to do motor mounts at the same time?
there anything else?

If you drop the crossmember and tilt the motor/tranny down, you should be able to get those top two bolts out easy enough. Just beware of the ATF bath. Use like 3' of extensions and work from the back of the tranny. I've done them that way before.

Let me know when this is happening, I'll try to swing by and offer my skills.

lol, i was gonna say, "you're doing at your house outside?...sucks to be you" lol.
I made quite a bit of room, we'll be able to do it in the garage next to the SS. IF the weather is decent. i MAY push the SS outside to give us more room. hell i'll even order pizza, bring beer/soda if you wish.

One thing i used doing my clutch that I really like where the swivel sockets (unversal and socket all in one). It made it easier to get the bolts.

another thing i just thought of that helped me to get my tranny back in after the clutch was to "buy" some bolts from home depot that are the same thread pitch and diameter as the tranny-to-engine bolts. Cut the heads off em and when its time to put the tranny back in thread them into the engine and slide the holes in the transmission over these makeshift "studs"...just an easier way to get the tranny lined up and in

Dropping the crossmember before the top two bolts are removed will do nothing but make it nearly impossible to get those bolts out. Think about it, you lower the rear of the tranny , the engine is going to get closer to the firewall up top, not farther away.

well if you let the trans drop down and you use extensions from underneath you can get the bolts, the firewall isnt that much of a problem since the motor/trans arent tucked all the way up.

kasey, we'll just pull the trans, itll go faster that way.

Well, I have removed tranny's from 4th gens alot of times and always remove the top two from up top and don't see how you will be able to get socket in there but if you have done it that way before I will take your word on it, I just know it doesn't look like its doable on the 4th Gen F-body tranny's I have taken out.

well whatever it is, we'll figure it out then. i've done them both ways so i know its doable. With extensions, swivel sockets, and patience anything is possible.

but regardless, i'll decide which way we're doing it when that day comes, if kasey stops being lazy...
