Drivetrain carnage
So took the 71 Camaro we put together to Englishtown today for the "digs". Its pre 1979 1/8th mile drag racing. First two passes we light and sweet just to feel the car out since it was my first time out with it. Third pass i went for all the glory and glorious explosions is what i got. As i hit third the rear grenaded, locked up and broke the ears clean off the u joint...
As far as times are concerned my best run was 8.0 @ 95mph, when i blew up i ran a 8.3 @ 70 mph.
Heres the pics of the damage, the flopping drive shaft didnt do much damage to the floor but it did mess my exhaust up pretty good. Moving foward im not quite sure what i want to do, maybe do a 12 bolt, maybe weld leaf spring mounts on and put the 9in in from the iroc i have... decisions
Here are some pics
This is the 8.5in 10 bolt, the carrier is cracked clean in half on both sides as well as nearly every tooth on the ring and pinion

Yeah I'm seeing mid 12's. I'm sure you weren't getting the best 60 either. That mph is pretty good though.

Thankfully the car still went straight.
That's strange, the 8.5" 10 bolts last to bottom tens in G bodies.

Yes. the GN/442's came with the 8.5 rear while the MCSS/GP/others came with the 7.5"

Agreed, not sure what the issue was there with this one but it sure was not happy going down the track lol.
And scott to answer your question over on facebook, the rear he was looking at was a 12 bolt from a Chevelle with the perches welded up to fit a second gen. It is drum to drum, 3.73 posi and a sway bar (which i didnt have before) for $700 so that is what is going in it next. It would have cost me that much or more to rebuild the 10 bolt.

Remember to check pinion angles on that perch job.

You would be in the low 12's if you get your 60' down in the 1.9 range.

Will be going over that when its in the car. I hope to have it painted and in the car by Wednesday, checking to see if I need to shorten the drive shaft and sending that out for repairs and a new u joint.
Maybe next week back on the road? Chatterbox meet?

Here are some more pics, tore into tonight.
Also found out on the new rear the bolt that keeps the carrier rod in place is snapped.. Is there any remedy for this? Only thing I can think of is drill the rod out because I can't get a drill at the proper angle to drill out the bolt without messing up the carrier.

well none of the above mentioned methods worked for getting that center pin out.. so I had to dremell, which took forever... after finally getting the pin out I realize, oh hey no c clips. so the previous owner use c clip eliminators, great. Now I pulled the carrier out, cleaned all the metal out from the dremell, and started to paint. Let it dry and the then tried to bolt on that nice Moser cover you also saw on snap chat and it doesn't fit. I ordered the cover for a GM 12 bolt passenger car and that is what I got, so I ran the part number of the housing. This is where things get bad.. turns out the housing is GM's "o type" housing which was used in Oldsmobile's for like 2 or 3 years. They have a 12 bolt cover and look like a 12 bolt, but inside are just the 8.5 10 bolts with 28 spline axles, the only benefit is they come with bolt in axles.. So basically I got double ****ed on the rear since he said it was 3.73 but was really 3.23 (there is like no aftermarket support for "o-type" rears) and also said it was a Chevy 12 bolt. Both of which I guess is my fault, either way very annoying. But in the end it will go in the car and I guess a further resolution will be delt with when/if this one blows up too.
Ill be putting it in the car and bring the drive shaft to get repaired monday

thanks, I def learned some 12 bolt wisdom on this one. Hopefully this 8.5in will hold up the way everyone says they should lol. Im just upset I cant use my shiny aluminum Moser cover. Knew it was too good to be true for $700 bucks.
