1987 IROC-Z
Just picked this up yesterday:
1987 IROC-Z
62,400 miles
LB9, T5, G92
Hardtop
Koni yellows
UMI adj camber plates
Adj panhard bar
LS1 front/rear brakes
Slotted front rotors
!A/C
!Smog pump
New:
Alternator
Water pump
Power steering pump
Radiator + hoses
180* Thermostat
Dual electric fans (on manual switch)
Battery
Mech. Fuel Pump
Accel distributor
Crane iginition box
I'm the third owner of this car. The original owner put about 40,000 miles on the car and then let it sit under a tree in Atco for about 15 years. The second owner got the car in 2008 and put in racing seats, G-force 5 point harness, an Autopower 4 point harness support cage, and took out the rear seats. He also put on the high-rise spoiler, painted the car, did the brakes and suspension work and swapped on a Holley 600cfm carb and RPM Performer intake manifold. It came with the original TPI with new injectors and a new distributor, cap and rotor.
The original 9 bolt rear was professionally rebuilt with 3.70s gears and new posi cones. The quick ratio steering box was also rebuilt along with new ball joints, inner/outer tie rod ends, center link and idler arm.
I plan to sell the seats and put in power seats from a 91 GTA. I'm debating removal of the harness bar, but it will stay for now. The only issue I need to resolve is the fuel pump. He put a Holley pump right in front of the rear axle and it cut out on me three times on the parkway driving home yesterday. The stock pump is still in the tank so I'll be hooking that back up and putting the Mallory 4309 AFPR on the carb. Oh and the e-brake doesn't work, so I'll be fixing that. Plus the car needs to be inspected...
And don't forget to buy my GTA.
~Matt

You went for it! Cool.
Post up in the tech section about the fuel stuff. Since it's carbed you can probably just put a mechanical fuel pump on it. It's missing the filter between the pump and carb (from what I can see). And if it's a Holley Red/Blue/Black pump out back it needs a canister filter too.
Why inspection? QQ that bitch.

Freshen it up under the hood and you are set. The exterior and interior both look mint. I would keep the seats the way they are. Sweet purchase...

I hate the seats and in case anyone hasn't driven with a 5 point harness on, don't do it. I was throwing quarters out the window at the tolls because I couldn't even turn my shoulders.

He put a Holley (blue I think) mechanical pump in already. I was cruising at 70 all three times and it would just start to sputter and hit a wall. The motor would die as soon as I put the clutch in. It's definitely the pump because the motor ran like a top and was great the entire rest of the ride.

Yea all it's missing is an LSX motor
I agree on the A/C delete. I think it's dryer hose or something. I will eventually get an actual A/C delete box.

The Holley red, blue, and black pumps are electric ones, usually mounted out back. Guys botch installs of them all the time.

Well chalk up another one. I read about the swaps on thirdgen about fuel injection to carbs and the Mallory AFPR solves the issue with the stock in tank pump. The stock pump for TPI puts out double what the carb needs. The AFPR knocks down the pressure. I'd like to go that route.

If that has a mechanical pump option on the block I have a pump you can have for free.

You can knock down the pressure THAT much w/a regulator and a stock tpi pump? I heard from a few sources the difference in psi is too much. What size carb you running?

That's actually what I was thinking. Seems like too much pressure to dial back to 6-8psi.

with a good regulator you can do about anything. my a1000 pump puts out ~45 psi and i have a steady 6.5 psi after my regulator.

hey check this **** out, the car HAS a mechanical pump, you can see it on the block in the pics! how many fuel pumps does this car have, lol.... what is the 8th digit of the vin? I see z28 emblems, shouldn't an iroc have iroc emblems? Matt are you sure that its not a factory carbed car? I dont see fuel lines on the driverside, which it would have if it was a TPI car. There may be no intank pump

correct, the z28 name was dropped in 88 and it just became an iroc-z

Oh christ. Well the 8th digit is an F and I looked over the build sheet. LB9 MM6 G92 J65 all that jazz. He gave me what he said is the stock TPI with new injectors. He said the wiring harness is MIA though because he yanked it out when he put on the carb. I also didn't think you could get a 9 bolt with anything but TPI in 87, but I could be wrong.
1320B4U: he said it's a Holley 600cfm, but I haven't confirmed via part # yet.
This thread shows a little about the Mallory AFPR for a TBI to carb swap:
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/ca...questions.html
I'm sure TPI has an even higher psi pump.

I think B4Z is the RPO code for IROC in that year. It looks like it has the 5500 redline tach which is for 305 TPI/5 speed cars.

Yea sorry. The build sheet has everything I needed to see. I'll take a pic later today when I get home. Off the top of my head it had:
B4Z - IROC
G80 - limited slip diff
G92 - performance rear axle (3.45 9 bolt)
J65 - 4 wheel disc brakes
KC4 - Oil cooling system
LB9 - 305 TPI
MK6 - Borg Warner 5 spd 2.95 1st gear w/OD
MM5 - 5 spd manual
