'02 Camaro CD in my '88 Monte SS

Hey, whaddya think? I picked up this radio from Craig (Little G) to replace my stock original '88 cassette deck. This is a stock Delco CD player from an '02 Camaro. I like using updated GM parts on an older car. I used GM's harness adapter kit, which comes with an antenna adapter and the 12-pin to 21-pin radio harness connector. This was truly a plug 'n play operation. Now I just need to replace the 16-year old stock speakers, and it'll be enough for me.

Oh, the wire that's hanging below the dash used to light the ash tray. I'm going to add a pin switch and a light inside the center console so I can actually see what CDs are in there.

Thanks for the compliment Tim! And it was cool to meet you that day up at Atco. I will see you at the Englishtown Swapmeet on the 25th, though I'm not sure if I can make the meet afterwards down in Ewing. I'd love to, but I have a 16-month old boy and a wife that'll be waiting for me at home. Since my Monte is becoming more of an F-body every day I really should be at some of the events!

Looks funny next to the old school HVAC, but very nicely done.

Thanx. It would be cool to adapt the F-body climate controls, but prolly more work than I want to get into. Next time I go out to the salvage yard I'll see if I can find some 3rd Gen F-car switch covers for the HVAC. They're all black, IIRC, as opposed to my black/chrome pieces. Am I right?

Yea, I think all/most of the 3rd gen ones were all black.

that radio fit in perfectly? I have an 86 trans am and i'm considering a cd player (converting cds to tapes is a pain in the ass) and i'd want to keep the stock look. Someone I met said that they put a 4th gen TA cd player in a 3rd gen TA, and it stuck out about 2 inches (which would not do for my car) Does anyone know if a 4th gen cd player will fit in a 3rd gen. my other option is to get the 3rd gen aftermarket cd player from classic industries with the 10 disk changer, but i dont know if im ready to dish out 700 bucks yet.

Yep, that radio is the same size as the old-school GM tape deck that came out of my '88. Even the locating pin on the back of the headunit is in the same place. If the mid-late '80s G-bodies used the same radios as the F-bodies, then the 4th-gen CD should fit in a 3rd-gen. My car proves that point.

Don't worry, you won't need the Sawzall; maybe just the BFH.

sweet, now i actually have something to back up my threats with. As wierd as it sounds, and i know it makes no sense, but the damn car seriously does seem to respond to threats. recently my "im gonna replace your (freakin) radio" threats havent been working because the car knows i cant afford the 700 dollar setup from parts 123 that fits right in. Someone told me that the radio sticks about 2 inches out of the dashboard tho. is that true?

My radio fits flush with the front trim piece on the dash, you can see it in the pic. Did that person even bother to try one out? Seriously, the old stock '80's radios and newer GM radios (up to 2002 anyway, not sure about the new double DIN's with RDS and whatnot) are almost the exact same size. There's no way it should stick out. The only way I could see it sticking out is if they didn't bother to push the locating pin on the back of the radio into the bracket behind the radio, and that's their fault, not the radio's.

I could show you sometime how it looks, I live pretty close to Paramus.

i got a stock cd player from a 1999 pontiac boneville...it fights right in...i just had to get the wire harness that plugs into the back of the radio from a junkyard then wire that to the adaptor so i could plug it right into my car...the radio fits flush and looks awesome....it even lights up that stock orange/red color as the rest of my gauges do...
