Anyone good with dirtbikes?

I got a 1979 Honda XR(XL?) 125 4stroke off a buddy of mine who didnt want to work on it. Ive had it for about a week, and Ive been tinkering with it here and there. I cleaned out the carb, jets and all and I am now getting Fuel. The spark was rather weak so I tossed a new Magneto in it, and now Im getting spark. No matter what I do this thing wont fire over. I loaded it up with ether and its still not firing. Does anyone know something about these things, like something I may be over looking? I seem to be getting decent compression, everyonce in a while itll backfire from all the crap thats loaded up in the cylinder. Im about pull it apart thursday and see what the internals look like. I have put a whole whopping $7.25 (New plug and fresh oil) into it so far, so its not a total loss if its shot. Anyone have any ideas? Ill take anything. My buddy wants to learn how to ride, so I figure this was the best thing for him to learn on since all the XR100s and 200s Ive ridden are Wheelie machines!
