I have always wondered how that was done myself.

it can be done but the results are sub-par. the only way to control the subs is through the bass control and that will also lower the bass/mids on your speakers. this doesnt sound like a big deal but it will when theres a song with a lot of bass or almost no bass. its a trade off, if you want a good sounding system you cant half ass it.

we did an install like that in my friends 98 mustang GT vert and it sounded suprisingly good. We did the rca convertors off the rear speaker wires, into Soundstream amp and to my soundstream mule subs i let my friend borrow. You just set the amp to low pass, and the radio bass setting right in the middle. with a good amp and subs youd be surprised.
But I do agree, the best way is an aftermarket head unit.

I agree with the aftermarket head unit as well. I have a full system in mine.
