another f-body
hey all, i just picked up an 91 Trans AM GTA with 180k miles but 60k on a rebuilt 305 motor.
heres a pic that resembles the car:
i'm new to owning a third gen, so anyone got any good places to start? it's in pretty good shape except the t-tops have been painted black by one of the previous owners.

If its an Auto, its most likely a TPI350. And if its a 5-speed probably a 305 TPI
Either one would still be pretty sweet.

correct me if I'm wrong, but they didnt switch to that nose until 90 or 91. 89 should look like 85 and up until it switched over.

Ive seen people do a front nose + gfx swap on their 85-90 TA's, but its highly doubtful that it was done. But good luck with it man. And dont rule out that its not a 350, cuz IIRC they only put the L98 in hardtops through the 87-92 third gen era. First mod you should definately do is SFC's. Dont let the body develop stress cracks like my 86 did. Then start with full exhaust/CAI , port the TB, H/C/I, 3.73's and your flying
Go to www.thirdgen.org, youll find over 30,000 people and more than 500,000 topics on what your looking for. Good luck with it!

thanks man, yeah, i'm not looking forward to putting a ton of money into it, i just want to finish a few things on it and get it as perfect as i can, since most of my money will go into the 98. i figured, hey, he';s willing to trade,i 'll take it and see what i can do with it.

Yeah it wasn't until midway through 1991 when they finally decided to put the 350's into hard tops because of torque. So since its a hardtop, it certainly can be a 350. Just check the VIN, and assuming its the original after the rebuild, you'll know.
Head over to TGO for the VIN decoder.

Or just look for the RPO code sheet in the console. Its also a good way to find out if its a WS6.
I just heard around that cuz of the torque, 350s were put into hard tops, mostly the late 80 GTAs, but I stand corrected.

There were some L98 T-top cars, but the vast majority were hardtops.

what he said. also, no 350s were mated to 5-speed transmissions. that would have necessitated other changes and GM wanted to keep costs down on these cars.
as for mods, look for the "free mod" section over at TGO. search until you find what you want, though, 'cause if you dare ask a question you'll get flamed.
