hey gang,
i dunno how many of you caught the begining of the ESPN2 coverage of the NHRA in dallas today. there was a huge wreck in prostock.
the simple version is that bruce allen, during a second session qualifying pass, got out of the grove and may have over corrected. he crossed the centerline and the car tipped onto it's side, sliding with the roof towards teh finish line.
kenny koretsky driving in the left lane was left with no place to go and hit allen at full speed. allen's car flew into more pieces than i can describe and tumbled down the track like a childs toy.
both men are ok. allen has already been released from the hospital with only the effects of a concussion and koretsky should be out some time this afternoon, suffered a bruised heart muscle. for more details:

on the broadcast most of the blame is being put on teh racing surface. cool conditions on an all concrete surface creates a very narrow groove. if you get out of the good line you are along for the ride.

I saw it on TV today. Man that looked bad. I can't believe they both lived. I hope both are alright and back to racing soon.

i saw another report that said allen actually got out of the car under his own power

an absolutely worst case scenario accident and the guy walks to teh ambulance with a little help. that is f'ing amazing.
the update on karetsky is that he plans to be out of the hospital in time to watch eliminations tomorrow.

i think nows a good time to commend the nhra rulebook for their strict regulations.

not somthing we always agree with when racing our street cars, but two mens lives may have been saved by the regulations on their class.

my thoughts exactly. People complain about the tech their street cars have to go through. The NHRA has been around for over 50 years, tech inspection isnt just made up, its created from experience. I've seen rulebooks from the 60s. They were 10-20 pages long max. People should be happy that there's rules to protect their lives at 100+ mph.

If you watch the video, kenny koretsky was still thinking clearly enough to pull the chutes after impact. Thats a good f-in driver. Wow

no updates on koretsky's condition yet today. hopefully he will get released and just told to take it easy for a while.
rumor from the reher-morrison camp is that allen will take a week off(he is a driver so we will see how that goes) and climb back in it to run again.
my prediction, he will be back at their shops on tuesday and looking to be in a car for testing on wednesday. lol

got a great example of the type of community race car drivers are. during the eliminations broadcast this afternoon they started talking about the accident again and said that ron krisher and his team have already contacted the allen and koretsky camps to let them know that if they need a car or parts they will be made available.
krisher is a stand up guy and a good example of how much respect these guys have for one another.

one stupid thing i saw as a result of all this. since allen had a qualifying pass that woudl have put him in the show the NHRA gave a bye run in the first round. wouldn't it make more sense to include the next fastest car in the field instead of putting a thrill free solo pass in front of all the people who paid to see the show?

The argument would have been that since Anderson got the by-run, if he were to get beat by the #17 qualifier, he didn't belong there anyway. It's the opponents job to get his/her car to the line come race day and if he can't the opponent gets a by-run, even in the event of a crash.

i understand that point of view. i just hate to see a bye run in the first round. it seems like a waste, especially in a class that they send home more cars than they qualify every week anyway. it would be a perfect opportunity to get a car onto tv that normally may not have a shot at getting into the show.
with how spread out the field was this week(compared to most weeks) i doubt the result would have been any different. but putting one more sponsor on TV and one more heads up race in front of the fans can't be a bad thing.
we got to see another example of the rule the way it is more commonly enforced when big frank had a fuel leak and had to shut off vs force. that gave force the free pass cause the car was ready to compete.

Good thing both are ok. I was watching it last night, and I did notice the groove. Any time someone edged out a little, they'd end up hazing the tires and going sideways. Definitely time to look into a new track surface.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he went to pull the chutes as soon as he saw allen coming into the lane.....as allen goes over top you can see that they are already mostly deployed.

Either way, glad to hear both drivers are ok. And doubly glad for that rulebook.

it is jsut a symptom of concrete surfaces.
concrete has more grip so everyone tends to run straighter down the center of the lane. that creates a fairly narrow groove that is normally safe. but concrete also collects dew very easily compared to a tarmac surface, so you put a high power car that likes to wander a bit a little off the groove and it is a formula for disaster.
that was also an absolute worst case scenario. i can't ever remember seeing such a violant car of car wreck in drag racing. hopefully i will never have to see it again.

yea i saw that .. it happened on friday night qualifying.. it was nuts

crashes like that are insane...

both of them are awesome, awesome pro stock drivers
