Possible incredible news?
I cut and pasted this from the NJ DMV website... if I read this correctly, does this mean that us ORY folk with o2 sims can now pass inspection with something as simple as having an empty cat welded around our Y pipe for the visual?
Why is New Jersey changing the emissions inspection process?
New Jersey currently fails to comply with federal clean air standards, in large part due to harmful automobile emissions. These pollutants cause serious respiratory problems for many New Jersey residents, especially children and senior citizens. Federal regulations require New Jersey to implement the OBD system test for newer vehicles in place of the current tailpipe emissions test. This will improve our inspection process by detecting problems in emission control systems before they possibly get worse and allow more harmful pollutants into New Jersey’s air.

Cars 96 and newer have no dyno/sniffer, just plug in 95 an older gets the old fashioned stuff... late models FTW

Yea, welcome to last year Ryan
As long as the car passes *most* self-tests, and it looks like you have proper cats in place, you're good to go. Not that we would ever condone such a thing

Yeah, sims will help you pass but if you pull in with hollowed cats and they can smell that the exhaust doesn't seem right they can still put it on the rollers and do the sniffer test which it would obviously fail. My 96 SS with longtubes and no cats was obvious that it didn't have cats just from the exhaust. It all depends on the inspectors working at the time and what kind of day they're having.

Once again, about the smell.... not if you tune out the cats. He's also saying just put cat shells aroudn the ORY (I assume at the same location as stock cats since they have to be by law... well you cant move cats).

the smell really cant just majically go away even with a tune...you could run a 15.5:1 a/f ratio & it would still smell rich coming out the tailpipe with no cat.

I know he was talking about putting cats in as shells but tuning is not going to make a car smell like it has cats when it doesn't. I've had a bunch of older cars without cats or EFI and it's obvious when a car doesn't have cats on it. That's why cats are put on cars, to reduce the harmful pollutants. But regardless, with OBDII testing you should be able to pass with LT headers and dual cat shells and O2 sims unless the inspector is having a real bad day and wants to pick on your car. Of course, with his window tint, that would be enough for them to fail it or stop and take a much closer look to see what else has been modified on the car. I would still take your car to a private inspection just because of the tint alone.

Well, if you are installing a catted y-pipe, why not have the O2's as well?
