Insurance companies

Need you guys to help out here. My dad used to work for AIG, has stock in AIG, and uses AIG for our insurance. however, there's GOTTA be something cheaper. Suring my semester off, or however long off, I may be able to swing it from working more but as it stands there's gotta be something better.

As many of you know my dad has his Hyundai (full coverage) , I've got the Camaro (just liability), and I am planning on buying a truck soon (just liability.)
I gave my dad the info on it and had him call the insurance compny to 1) see how much to add it, and also 2) see how much we'd save by switching him to the primary driver on the Caaro instead of me being primary him being secondary.

The e-mail I got back from him said,

"$528.00 to add the truck for six months making our insurance bill $2,621 every six months. That's way out of our reach right now. I really thought it would be less than that."

That's including all the possible discounts and perks we can get.

So basically, looking to see if there's some cheaper companies to check out. Thanks.

interesting.. any additional car after my primary vehicle for just liability is 350 a year. I have IFA. but ive had them for 6 years, under my own name, and never made a claim and no accidents, and 0 points on my license(2 point on insurance from past 3 years). I pay like 1600 a year total for my denali(full coverage) and now my iroc(liability)

I have NJM and I have full coverage on both the 4Runner and the 96 SS and I'm paying around $1200 a year after the dividend refund. The 4Runner alone was around $700 and then the Camaro raised it to a little over $1300 but I get a dividend back every year and it's usually around $100.

I just switched to IFA and I saved an assload of money by going on my own plan instead of under my moms umbrella. I'll probably be adding another car shortly too!

I'll bet you saved a lot because you dropped you liability coverage limits.

With Geico, my Hyundai (02, full coverage), james' neon (full coverage), and the bird (liability only) are 2200 a year. My Hyundai alone is $1000 a year. If I stayed on my dad's policy with NJM, I'd be paying $1300 a year on my car alone.

Well NJM is out...
  • All drivers must be free of any at-fault accidents, motor vehicle violations and/or license suspensions within the past three years.

  • All of the automobiles on the policy must be registered or leased to you or your resident spouse and garaged at the application address
I got my permit 10/1002 and my license 10/10/03... I have 1 at-fault accident (april 4th 05), 1 suspension (October '05 for a whole 20 days), and... let's see... a total of 7 tickets, two of which were thrown out, one was a tint ticket, and only 2 of them carried points. I had a total of 4 points... took a DMV class lost 3 of them for a 1 yr probatiation ... had my accident, suspended for 20 days, probation re-started in early october. Since the summer have had 0 points on my license... insurance points are probably still there.

My dad has also gotten a couple tickets over the past few years.

And also, out garage can't even fit a car.

Gonna go check some other companies out online to see if I/we are even eligible...

As far as I know, "garaged" does not mean in a physical garage. It's just the physical location that the cars "live" for lack of a better word. Thus, if you were to move out completely, you could not technically still maintain insurance on your parent's policy because your car is garaged elsewhere.

Don't call, they'll just tell you to do it online. Do it online. It's pretty easy.

We tried all the big names, Allstate, Progressive, AIG, Geico...Geico was the cheapest by at least $1k per year.

Yes it gets tedious, and it gets worse if you go to buy it, but it's worth it. Because James doesn't drive his 2 cars a lot (since he has the beater benz that's insured through his work), we wanted to call and explain the situation and get an accurate quote. Geico wouldn't let us, and said do it online, and then call. So we did it online, set both cars to get no more than 3k miles per year, and whenI called to purchase, I asked about it, and that was all we needed/could do to get the lowest rate given the situation.

Yea, I figure I drive around 10k miles a year, so if I were to set the camaro at 5k or 6k and the truck at say 8k then that might be able to keep it down...
