cars w/ unknown mileage
does anyone know the deal with cars that have unknown mileage? im looking to buy a car that had a replaced dash. according to carfax the car was inspected once at 130k, then 2 years later at 8k. im not worried about mileage on the car cause its in excellent condition, i just wanna make sure i dont get in trouble if i try to sell the car later and then have it thrown at me that the mileage was once rolled back. btw- car is a 1996 passat and the odo now says 36k.

on the title, it may be marked "NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE" Or then when you register it, be sure to check off the option on the title stating, The odometer has exceeded its mechaical limits or has started at 0 again. at least that way, if you sell it, it'll be already stated on the title as being a unknown mileage issue and since you registered it and got that title right away like that, theres really no way it could come back to you, as long as you make the new buyer aware when you sell it.
is it a nj or NY title? i'll take a pic of one i have here to show you what needs to get marked off.

VW's can be very risky to buy. From research I found out they seem to be 50/50 with half the people never having problems to half the people having a ton of problems and several getting rid of the car via the lemon law. I would advise against VW based on the history of people I know who had them.

jeff- the car is a 96 VW passat gls. the car is in excellent condition. i got to drive the car last week and it drives excellent. the only 3 things that are not functional on the car is the AC, the ABS, and the fuel gauge. i'm well aware of how ****** VWs are. my mother has a 99 audi and in the past 2 years alone we have spent 11k on repairs alone. including 7k for a new motor and 2k for 2 new front axles. and the car is going to the shop this week for a brake problem even though the pads and rotors are only 2 months old. i am buying the car for two reasons, one to teach my father how to drive a manual and also to keep some mileage off my saturn. but for 400 dollars, why not?
