What car, and what's the rest of the setup on it?
Any street driving at all, or is this a pure track car?

Well, if you are going to keep it for street duty as well as some track time, I would just get a shift kit and a mild converter for now (assuming you have the 4L60e, and not a T-56). Once you decide to make some radical changes to the motor, then you can worry about beefing up the tranny more.

If you have the 4l60 i wouldnt spend any money on it personally...run it into the ground then upgrade to a th350
if you've got the t56 run that into the ground and then take it to ttp for their t56 overhaul(i believe its rated at 450hp?)

 | yes you have a 4l60 and converting it to manual will only make it more fun to drive IMO, and will make it less consistent while drag racing...keep the 4l60 for now, but i wouldnt spend money on it like i said...wait till it blows up and while you wait for that decide whether you want to switch to a 6-speed or go to a th350

for now your trans is the last thing id be looking at to be honost.

open up the exhaust, make yourself a cold air intake, and learn to drive the car...once you get to where your 1/4mi times dont improve any more then start looking for more stuff to do

A TH350? For a street car? Huh, I didn’t think people went backwards (i.e. no OD) for street cars anymore. You can’t build the 4L60E to handle streetable hp? I thought they could be built pretty strong. I guess I got some learning to do about these new transmissions.

Eh...if you plan on making some crazy power and you want the absolute best 1/4 mile times possible, than Jon's advice is good, but for your average street car you would be fine with a built 4L60e. They can reliably handle over 500 hp when they are built up.

 | yea they'll hold 500hp for the same price that it would cost to build a th350 to hold 800hp

Then a TH350 and a gear vendors unit might make a nice street combo. If you got $15k for an LS7, you got $2200 for a GV unit.

If you get serious about racing, dump that 4l60e and go for a better automatic. There are many places that make great transmissions, and some that make really crappy ones. You really need to set a plan out of what youre going to do to the car so you can match the engine/rear/weight etc to a good converter. As for swapping to a 6speed its not the best for going racing. Good luck whatever you decide.
