NJ points system

Could someone explain to me the real way the whole points system works in NJ? I've heard a hundred different things about it and want to know what the deal is...

I got a ticket about a year ago in PA, it was speeding and dropped to 5 mph over, and although its no points in PA, 2 points transferred to NJ. Its the only moving violation I have currently on my record (knock on wood)...

when do the points dissipate, and when did they actually make it onto my liscense? was it the date on the ticket or the date of court or what?

Thanks.

TMK, every year w/o points you lose 2. But insurance points hang in there for like 3 years and 90 days, they don't 'go away'.
