Rattle Can Wheels

For anyone who has painted a set of wheels...

What kind of paint did you use? Did you sand before you painted? Did you just tape off & spray? How long do you think that stuff lasts? If you painted anything did you notice if it flakes or not when driven on a regular basis? What kind of tape should I use?

I had a wild idea that i think would look really decent for cheap, but it requires some paint. Im just looking for any pointers!

i used duplicolor wheel paint

tips
clean real good
index cards between wheel and tire(if tire is mounted)(if doing whole wheel or close to)
any masking tape will do, I used cheap tape but 3m tape is prolly what some one should use that has money

the wheel hasnt chipped that much, i know one or two did, but i repainted that area and its good now.

What type of wheels?

If you get them blasted then the paint will stick real well.

yea blasting the wheel is best for adhesion... but if its aluminum make sure the media isnt going to destroy the wheel if its a steal wheel you should be fine... also if you take it down to bare metal you will have to prime... use an etch primer so that it will not rust back.... and if you just want to paint over what you have now you should sand it... use some 600grit sand paper or even jsut a red scotch brite to scuff the area being painted ifyou paint over a non sanded surface your asking for peelback.... what wheels are you painted so we have a better idea of what your doing... you can basically use any paint on the wheels because they dont get that hot i used engine enamel on my old set of salad shooters... but youll have to clear them also because just bare basecoat even if its enamel will dull out and eventually just look like crap.... hope this helps you man

i painted the wheels on 76 with plasti-kote toyota yellow scratch paint in 6 OZ cans, this was temporary but they came out pretty good, just make sure you clean them REALLY well and dont put it on to heavy!!

It's all prep. I did a set of steel 79 TA rims years ago. Duplicolor still made the matching paint, and I taped off the details myelf & did the silver accents. Looked good at least through 18 months later when the car was sold.
