fire extinguishers?
Today we replaced the fire extinguisher that didnt work in the kitchen, the next step is a fire extinguisher that I can mount in the garage, and 1 for in my car, where can I get a fire extinguisher that is good for automotive fires, that is big and I can mount on the wall of a garage(the biggest extinguiser available!) also what is the best extinguisher to carry around in a car? where can i get this also? I checked home depot, pep boys and ace hardwhere, they only had wimpy ones, wich is now in my kitchen. I really dont want to have to put another fire out with a garden hose, with the miracle grow still attached!

For the car you need a special extinguisher thats made of some special crap that is even safe to spray in the motor if need be. We had what you would call a "run away" with a diesal last week and that damn extinguisher saves our lives!!

I believe for Auto-Cross and Road Racing a 5 BC or larger fire extinguisher with a pressure gauge and a metal mounting bracket is required. It must be very securely mounted, ideally into metal. And I'm pretty sure you can order those from Summit, and I might have even seen those at Home Depot myself.

go ahead and get one for the garage, but DO NOT buy one for the car yet, it will expire before your car even rolls out of the driveway

Basic dry chem Extinguishers are good for garage such as a all purpose ABC one and one for the car a BC dry chem one is good. I had a catalog on them from Amerex but I lost it some where. They do make a clean agent system for office buildings for computer area that dont harm the computers but Im not sure its the same for autos. If you want a good extinguisher and not just a throw away one you can contact a Fire extinguisher company. There are a lot in the area but there is a big company thats in south plainfield not sure of the name but its where the My fire dept gets theres filled and replaced.

You should a ABC dry chemical in your garage as a back up.You definately dont want to spray it on your car. The sodium bicorbonate in an extinguisher is corrosive on metals. If you buy a halon it will run you anywhere from 135-190 pending on what size. I have that product that John (pamperd -z) posted about. It is amazing stuff. I sell racecar kits and 12-32oz spray for home and garage cleans up with water I dont wanna step on anyones toes on this forum so if you have any questions pm me.

That would be halon 1301.As long as its halon 1211 it can be used until 2008 per NFPA standards.NHRA is also outlawing them on race cars as of 2008.

Exactly.Its made for high tempature burning metals such as titanium and magnasium that will explode when mixed with water. Its made from sodium chloride. They might use it at airports but mostly at metal fabrication shops. Man I feel like such a dork for knowing this!

wait, titanium ignites at a high temperature? I know magnesium does, wanna see it in action, look up the 1955 Le Mans race, worst crash in the history of automotive racing, over 80 people died. The mercedez's chassis was made out of magnesium. I remember workign as a desiel mechanic for a rental company, we had extinguishers in the trucks, the pressure in them never lasted long, so wed just take them out, replace them ,andthe old ones were fun to shoot each other lol, not so good to breath tho lol.

titanium, aluminum, and many steel allys can ignite under the right conditions. aluminum lets off an extremely dangerous fume when burning that can sufficate a person in under 5 mins.
if anything gets hot enogh to ignite a metal, i am not going to think about a fire extinguisher as much as concerning myself with leaving the area. lol

That class 'D' extinguisher is marked with a YELLOW STAR on it with a 'D' in the middle of it.
Big Mike....I might wanna be talking to you about those extinguishers.....not that I need one, but just as far as 'business' goes.
