New EPA Standards

http://www.fquick.com/blog/New_EPA_T...d_MPG_for_Cars

Quote:
According to Wired News, new EPA test standards have forced manufacturers to lower advertised efficiency claims on most models compared to previous years. These tests now factor in real-world conditions such as speeding, varying weather and lead-footed driving. Vehicles like hybrids with smaller engines pay a higher penalty during the acceleration test, as well as the tests that simulate going up a hill and maintaining highway speeds.

The estimations are based on data from Edmunds.com that assumes 15,000 miles driven per year and gasoline at an average price of $2.70. As seen from the chart (click on the thumbnail), hybrids take the biggest hit which means an even tougher sell for dealerships to consumers.

In terms of hybrids, the only one that helps you break even in a respectable amount of time is Toyota's Prius compared to the Toyota Camry, which takes 1.2 years to break even when considering added costs when initially purchasing the car.

So in summary, the two top-selling hybrid vehicles, the Prius and Honda's Civic Hybrid, will lose 12 and 11 miles per gallon respectively from their city driving estimates. Ouch.

my 2002 civic with 175K still gets 35mpg on the highway and 28-30 in the city.

I think any gas small car that says above 36-38 hwy is about max, now I've heard people with the newer VW diesel are getting 42 and up on the hwy.

The Avalanche overall gas avg is 17-18 mpg per tank. almost what the sticker said. Heck even the Hawk with converter and gears still gets 21 mpg on the highway, now city mileage is a whole different story.

another nail in the hybrids coffin, my dad always said from day one that they were essentially worthless. people would sell their current car to get a hybrid, shell out 15 grand and get a sluggish car that has about 25-50% better gas mileage than other cars

My brother got one of those mercury mariner hybrids. Its slow as hell, and the electric motor part only turns on if youre idling for more than two minutes or consistantly driving under 25 mph... and it only gets like 19mpg. Worthless.

Kim puts on about 130 miles/day with her comute, travel all over the place and every other month we put 700-1000 miles on going to the in-laws.

its our 3rd civic and not one mech issue with it. If the new Civic nose was not so ugly we would get another one, but looks like it maybe a Accord or CRV as the replacement when this one dies.

We will have to see how this two-mode system works out for GM. They invested a lot of money into the engine and massive CVT trans.

I must say i was very impressed with my lady friend's 4-cyl accord. its pretty quiet, seats are comfy, handles well, is very efficient, etc.... i can go on for quite a while. i love it. i think its an all around great car. i understand the automatic trans is the weakpoint in that car so i would recommend a manual if possible. but i would certainly look into one of those.
