increases are usually based on the companies performance. They may have had a better year last year and so were able to give more of an increase. Also maybe he works harder then you, or maybe he's a kiss ass and the boss likes him better. You just never know.

Exactly. A lot of places are experiencing much slower business this year. I didn't notice until some of the places in my area started closing down or scaling back their business. One place in particular that I used to hit up for lunch all the time now serves smaller portions for the same price.

well, its a maintenance job..basically like working for a town but on a smaller scale, its a gated community, so its not like slow business is a cause for it. my boss put in 4% for everyone, we all got 2.5%. the security dept. also got jack ****. its not based on performance, everyone in the department gets the same percentage, but because they decided to be cheapasses this year instead of last year, i get ****ed.

What was his raise this year? If it was $.50 or less, then it was prolly what Gene and Bill said.

he got the same i got, 30 measly cents...i feel i shouldve been matched to his 12.75 since its the same position, etc, and its not based on company workload/production because its pretty much a municipality with budgets and whatnot, so its not like we produce money by working.

Matt,
Have expenses for the community gone up? Have there been any new hires? Something tells me that your employer is not just trying to be a dick. Last year's inflation rate was around 3.25 (IIRC).

im the newest hire...cost of living has gone up more than 2.5%, we should at least match cost of living.
Employer = cheapasses...they seriously dont want to pay for anything that they dont have to.
and bubba....harder work isnt seen by the people that control our pay, only my boss would know who works harder....and honestly i work harder than he does anyway so that argument is null

If that is really the case, find a new job. If they can't match cost of living and you were a satisfactory employee then you should bail.

we're going to find out what cost of living is and see if we can fight it, one of the guys that works with me used to work for a DPW so he has connections...he can find out what cost of living is. we'll see what happens

If all of your co workers feel strongly about this issue then you should all gather and form a union. You can start your own local or bring in a union to help to start a collective barganing local. This way you can all fight for fair wages and benifits, but it has to be done as a whole and not individualy.

I wish I had your problem...I work for NJ Transit, and we haven't had a contract in 5 years. And in the 19+ years I've been there we NEVER got a cost of living increase! It turns us all into throat cutting rat bastards who have to cut each other's throats to get overtime to survive. Meanwhile, the 8 gazillion mgmt. azzclowns get yearly raises and bonuses, and those people are about as needed as a fish needs a bicycle!

All depends on the boss, he's probably getting more money because he's been there a year longer..or no shot at you but your boss might think hes a better worker.

2.5 ... I thought my yearly 3.5% was bad. My company (I work for Caci a gov. contractor on Mcguire) is good though if your an exceptional worker my boss can put in for a bigger raise. Last year I got a 6% and ive already been promised another raise on top of the anual when our new contract kicks in in a few mths. Keep up the hard work is all I can say, it'll pay off in the end.

so, basically what happened was that he started a year before you. their raise structure was different last year than this year. because he had the old raise, he is making more than you are. he was making more than you are now, given the respective time in on the job, which you think is unfair. but they will dictate what the raise structure is, and if you want to continue working, you will accept their raise.
the bit about getting a union together may or may not work out for you. they may decide to lock you out and hire a company to provide their employees for them. you never can tell how bringing a union into a smallish-type environment will work out. in any case, if you continue to work, you are implicitly accepting their raise.
since it's basically an at-will employment situation, they could fire you for any reason and you would have to prove in a court that they did wrong. be careful, whatever you do. if it's going to be a union, hold all meetings off-site and have everyone swear to keep it secret from management. any advance warning of what you are doing could tip the scale in their favor.
i worked for two large and one small corporations as a manager. basically we kept the unions out by treating our employees fairly and not giving them any reason to want a union. of course, you can't keep everyone happy all of the time, and some would complain no matter what you did for them, but in general the employees were happy with their compensation packages.
