ps3 owners inside.
guys, im looking to get a ps3 and went to bestbuy today and found out the 80 gig is discontinued and all they have is the 40 gig while they wait for sony to release the 120 gig version.
the 40 gig still plays blurays and all that but it looses the backwards compatability of the 80gig.
my question is, if i have a ps2 and am keeping that as well, will the 40 gig do everything else i need it to do? will 40 gig be enough memory for me if i play mostly sports games?

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim. Not manufactured anymore.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 60-80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.
They are all based on Blu-ray. They all play PS1 games.

I have the 40 and it works for me. I thought that not having the backwards compatibility would stink, but since my PS2 has been unhooked I haven't even thought about it.

I just saw a 60 gig at blockbuster 2 days ago. If your dead set on getting the 60 I'd check places like that, that are likely to sell less ps3 systems

i have the 40 gig also and its still fine. There's a place in glassboro near me that has a whole bunch of 80 gigs but they don't advertise them, you have to ask.

I heard the 60 and 80 versions make a lot of noise, which could get annoying when watching a movie. The 40 is very quiet.

Yea, My 60 gig is loud. And I have the extra intercooler fans on it, but with surround sound you don't notice it.

I've heard bad things about those fans..ill try to find the article, it was something along the lines of the intercoolerfans causing the ps3 fans to burn out, wich then inturn makes the ps3 overheat

exactly, it uses power before the power reaches the ps3 unit and it has burnout issues.

I worked at Sony and heres the major difference- the 80gig has all three hardware systems inside it (PS1, PS2, PS3). This means you can play any PS game ever made on that system and it will upscale the graphics for you if its a PS1 or 2 game. The new 120gig is a hardware emulator. It does not have the physical PS1 and 2 systems inside of it. In order for you to be able to play a PS1 or PS2 game on the new systems, Sony has to release the updated version of the game as a download patch for the 120gig PS3. Its the same concept for what Microsoft does with the xbox 360. If you have an old xbox game an you want to be able to play it on your 360, Microsoft would have had to released an update for the game so when you put it in, it'll work. Its a way for Sony to save a lot of money in production costs for the PS3, but it means that you wont have 100% backwards compatibility. So, if you really like your older games and some of them are obscure titles that you dont think Sony will release patches for, then try and find an older system like the 80gig. I got my brother one last summer when Sony tolds us they would be discontinuing them. Like Paul said, they are out there somewhere, but probably in obscure places.
