I plan on getting a MIG welder in the near future and was wondering if anyone has any good or bad experiences with the different brands. So far, I'm leaning towards Lincoln. mostly because thats what I used at school so I'm already familiar with it. not sure which one to get though. I was thinking about the SP 140T. seems like a decent welder, but I dont know how that would handle heavier work. I'm almost tempted to get a 220V one and turn it way down for light stuff just so I can have the ability to weld thicker metal if I wanted to. in a perfect world, I'd have a TIG welder, but I cant spend 2K on a welder right now


Thoughts? Opinions?


also, what would be the cheapest place to buy it from?

we bought a Linclon 175 at lowes dont remember what it cost but it does all that i need in my shop and welds real nice and its very easy too use even if you never welded before its easy - my guess 375 bucks -

Miller or Lincoln.

All we use ere at my work are lincoln's. 255's mainly. But my friend has a nice Miller in his garage comparable to the lincoln.

I think Miller welders are the best on the market. I have the Millermatic 140. Its for 110V. Its a nice machine real easy to set and really nice quality. I paid around $600 for it but well worth the price. You can even get a spool mate for it so you can do aluminum and stainless steel. Ive done all my welding with it including welding my sub frame connectors on.

I weld with a MillerMatic 175 with the Ar attachement. Works awesome, and handled everything from frames and roll bar stuff all the way down to thin rusted floor pans. If you are going to be welding anything thick don't bother with anything other than a 220V 30A unit in my opinion. It was like night and day when I went from a 115 to a 220.

Go with a 220v. I bought my Millermatic 175 several years ago from http://www.indianaoxygen.com/index.htm they had the best prices. I just purchased a plasma cutter from them as well and they still have the best prices and free shipping.

ive got a lincoln weld pak 3200 from home depot..did my subframes and exhaust with it.. dont remember how much it cost.. its a 115 unit

I have lincoln 220 volt unit I got off of eBay brand new cheap a few years ago. It has worked great for me with no issues. If you can swing it, get the 220 volt model.

millers are the best out there, but also can cost the most.

I have a little 110v clarke 130en or something like that. its a mig, uses gas and works very very well on light gauge metal and will do a pretty good job with 3/16. It will weld 1/4" but i'd prefer something a bit more powerful for that. I couldnt pass it up, it bought it second hand, brand new in box, came with a cart and a new outright tank of argon/co2 gas for 300 bux

If i ever buy another one it will be a miller 230volt unit

i have a MM210 mig welder and a 200dx dynasty tig welder......dont waste your money on a 120volt welder keep saving until u can afford a single phase...trust me

According to the owner of the shop he feels the Lincoln's are slightly better quality than Miller, hence the reason they also cost a bit more. For someone who's a hobbyist and won't be welding every single day either brand should be fine.

I've used both a Miller (at my HS) and a Hobart (at home). I liked the Miller much better then the Hobart. The setting were easier to use and understand.

I bought a Miller Passport Plus as I needed the portability. Couldn't be happier with it. Runs on 110 or 220, internal or external gas supply and a plethora of accessories available. At the shop I use a Snap-On MM140SL, and it is plain awesome. 100% duty cycle at full output
