and the iroc goes under the curtain today

i start to tear her down for new paint! 11months ago she got fresh paint. but now the primer is bleeding through the paint cause Vic's Autobody screwed up. jackasses. anyway. she'll be done in around a month, ill keep everyone updated.

Yeah Jim has a good question. After all the push to go to professionals for a paint job, staying away from Maaco, what caused the failure? What "type" of paint job did you originally order? One coat, three coats, how much clear? Who did the prep work, etc.

I USED TO HAVE an 85 Camaro 305 4bbl, 90 Firebird V6, 97 Firebird V6 (10 speakers!). Despite the two family vehicles, 3 kids, wife and mortgage, I can finally realize the dream - 88 TA almost all stock... for now.

sorry took so long, basically. the guy did all my repair work on teh car, put the new wing on, he is around the street from my house, my dad even coached his kids in hockey! and THEY were excited to do the car for me since its rare in my area young kids want to fix up a muscle car. so basically it was a 2g paint job, the car needed super minor body work. then he upped it to 3 cause my door was effed up. 11months later i work at a body shop, brought the car to the shop on my night off dropped it off for my boss to look at the next day, he calls me at my other job and tells me the car wasnt sealed properly and the primer? is bleeding through the paint, it looks dulled out and now you can actually feel it. and everything on the car when it got redone last year was PPG

this guy does a decent amount of muscle car resto's. some customs, and is a 'corvette specialist" he ALWAYS has tons of corvettes in the shop behind the shop and waiting to get in the shop. the thing was he kept dickin me around when i wanted the car in there, then i had to wait damn near an extra 2 weeks. but this time its getting done right and im going to be working on the car this time so. at least it will be more then looking good to me since ill be putting some hours into it

whats that saying with paint....90% prep 10% paint? how much you put in determines how much you get out.

yeah, i'm thinking it's more than just the sealer. most sealers are just extra paint that they have around from other jobs, mostly white, but can be any color as long as it contrasts the final color. i'm thinking maybe your car wasn't sanded thoroughly. in addition to the chemical bond that paint systems offer, PPG is just one, nothing can beat the mechanical bond that a good sanding can give. if the old paint wasn't scuffed properly, or the primer was sanded with too fine a grit, well, i think you get the idea. basically, i think blaming it on the sealer is kind of a cop out, but if you respect your new boss' opinion, then i won't argue with it. it just might be that the sealer wasn't part of PPG's system. but for a guy to claim to be a corvette specialist, i think he should be hanging his head in shame over your paint job.

could also have been the environment, drying, or moisture in the air system. that usually makes fish eyes but never know. maybe a chemical they used to strip wasn't thoroughly removed.

you going to wet sand the paint before they put the clear on? its so worth it.

well my boss said we are going to use the old as a good base. and the other shop hasnt heard about it yet, im hoping to find time between both jobs and home life to go there and bitch them out about it. but i guess its going to turn out better in the long run, wish it coulda been right from the start. and my boss is saying that the old shop didnt properly seal the car, not blaming it on what they used, they just did a bad job. but the good news i finally gave in.....new emblems, new grille, new foglights ( expensive =*( ) and new GM replacement weatherstripping kit. oh well. just gonna do it right and hopefully run into no more problems!
