If you need a job, go get a job. Don't worry about where or what, just get yourself working. Then continue to look for a better job in your free time. If you want to get a mall job, go fill out apps ASAP since most of the retail chains are reporting that they will be hiring far fewer people this season than ever before.

Dunno where in North jersey you are, but if you want, apply online at Sears and I can see if I can make some phone calls to see who's hiring?

What about subbing in the local schools? Easy money, $80 - $110 a day for 6 hours of work, out by 3 or so, with time to get a second job or whatever.

If you are 18 and not going to school, you should consider two jobs.
The first job should be something in the career field you want to end up in. If its automotive, apply to be a parts monkey at an Autozone or something similar, or work at Sears as a tech writer or entry level tech doing oil changes and tire rotations. Maybe look into an apprenticeship with an independant shop that pays peanuts, but will give you the skills and experience you need since you aren't (or are you?) going to school for it. Call on friends of the family and see if they can help you get somewhere. Somestimes the uncle who is a doctor, has a trusted mechanic he can refer you to.
The second job should be something that is easy to do and allows you to work later hours. If your first job above is during normal business hours, places like grocery stores, Barnes and Noble, gas stations and the like, are open late, allowing you to put a few hours in after you've had dinner, up to midnight or so. You don't have to work every night, just a few times a week that provides supplimental income if your primary job doesn't pay enough to live on.
You are still young - many folks go to college and dont enter the work force (beyond some part time hours) until 21 or 22. Go get the skills and experience you need, on the job, if you aren't in school. Make enough money to survive, then look for real career money in a few short years.
Good luck!
