popping out of gear

ok, so i just got my trans am on sunday its a 97 trans am m6 the car is a great cond but there is my only problem and i hope someone can help me out everytime i go to back up i put it into gear and let of the clutch and it pops out but if i put my hand on the shifter and hold it as i let of the clutch it wont pop out any ideas ? my friend thinks it mite be cuz of the short shift not being at the right adjustment or in my gear going ?

bad synchros definitely. mine pops out of 3rd randomly. getting worse and worse.

I wouldnt say anything definate. The shifter could be out of adjustment but if it is not then it could be synchros but it could also be a bent fork the only real way to know is to get it apart and survey the damage.

Yeah, if it's an aftermarket shifter with adjustable shift stops that could be your problem. The bolts could be in too deep keeping you from engaging the gears fully.

if its a pro-5.0 with the adjustments, then being out of adjustment would keep it from going all the way into gear in the first place, and there would be a massive racket as soon as he started lifting off the clutch.......

there is also only one adjuster on the front, and one adjuster on the back of the shifter, so if the shifter was causing a reverse problem, it would be causing a 1, 3, 5, R problem

I've never used a Pro 5.0 So I don't know about that...

But I know a Billet Plus will kick out of gear if you misadjust the stops, including reverse.

probably the synchros, my civic does the same thing except in 2nd gear

mine pops out of gear when i back up too it will even pop sometime if i am holding it

Deff in need of a rebuilt. Could be synchros or bent for. Mite as well do steal forks and up grade the synchros
