				Possible setback for the Camaro?

I saw this on another site and thought it may be of interest.

Every time GM turns a corner it seems to come face to face with another obstacle. The latest setback concerns supplier Cadence, LLC, which provides interior parts for the 2010 Camaro. Cadence declared bankruptcy in August, and is now in liquidation proceedings. To GM's chagrin, joining Cadence in its descent into commercial tar pits are the specialized machines that GM needs to make parts for the Camaro.

If GM can't get the tooling, there are certain to be disruptions at assembly plants and then on down the food chain. The General would then need to pay to have the tooling made again while it looks for another supplier, a cost GM describes as "substantial." GM would like to have a new supplier in place by January 12, 2009 because Camaro production is slated to begin on February 16, with deliveries in mid-March.

So far, it's unclear as to who actually owns the machines in question - Cadence or GM - and Cadence has had nothing to say on the matter. Regardless, if GM doesn't get its way, then it has to spend a chunk of the money it just fought for to recover old ground. The most recent precedent isn't promising: Chrysler tried to get the tooling from bankrupt parts supplier Plastech, and was denied. Thanks for the tip, Jerry

Yeah I'll take one in 10 years when they are worth next to nothing just like the GTO.

Ha, another setback. Thats funny. The day the new camaro comes out is the day all 4th gens become classics. It doesn't matter to me since I prefer the looks of the 4th gens to the new camaro, but I feel bad for those constantly waiting to buy one. The new transformers movie coming out in a few months will tease the audience once again with Bumble Bee. The whole trilogy will be over by the time they release this car.

Since when did a new generation make the previous generation a classic? Look what 4th gens did to 3rd gens and what 3rd gens did to 2nd. The new camaro will make 4th gen prices plummet even further.

yeah, i think that's what he means. more along the lines of obsolete, no NOS parts available, etc. it's a good 20 years before there is enough of a base of "restorers" available to have it make sense to start supplying after-market. even then you have places like year one that already supply 4th gen pieces in significant quantities. and everyone and their brother has an LSX block they want to sell ya.

second gens are where it's at, now, though. they slipped quietly from "worth next to nothing" to "finance your kid's college education" in a heartbeat, it seems. i let an '81 go that was in full running condition for $850 that i know i will regret at some point, and that was 2 weeks ago. it seems, as usual, that the Z cars are more sought after, too, regardless of year. i can see buying a plain jane '81 and making a Z car clone...

The 4th gen aftermarket has been in a decline since 2002. I remember opening up Summit or Jeg's and finding like 10 pages of stuff just for LT-1s and LS-1s, now you're lucky to get two pages, and its all junk anyhow. There used to be all sorts of aftermarket companies making stuff, now it's pickings. It won't take the new Maro to put the 4th gens under, just a few more years.
