The 32V 396 LT1 dream is still alive!
ubg had to put his engine plans on the back burner for a while, due to other things tying up his bux. But now he is in a better $$$$$ status, so he just sent a check to Bret Bauer [Bauer Racing Engines] to get back in the groove. Bret has been awesome to ubg, as he has waited quite a while for ubg to get back into a better financial state. Bret is doing some RADICAL reworking on the heads, and he also designed a state of the art rocker system. ubg will be paying a trip up to see him shortly, and hopefully ubg will have another check to hand him in person.
And for those who don't know about ubg's project, here is some info:
1997 LT1 block bored .030, converted to 4 bolt mains, set up with a piston oiling system, main stud girdle, polished/deburred lifter valley, plugged, straightened deck, partial water jacket fill.
Lunati 3.875 stroke crank
Carrillo 5.875 rods
Pistons [TBD]
Custom spec cam by Bret Bauer [TBD]
Arao Engineering/Dominion 32 V heads www.araoengineering.com
RADICALLY reworked/ported by Bret Bauer @ Bauer Racing, and also a custom valve train by Bret and Jon Bauer
Radically reworked Edelbrock Victor 18 degree intake manifold
Holley 4500 series Dominator carb
NOS N20 system
Custom 2 inch primary headers
Projected HP: 700+ [w/o N20]

How do you feel about Bret?
The internet is full of opinions on him, curious to see yours.

That's great to hear this will be moving forward. Should be a badass setup when completed.

Checked out that link.....those heads look sick!!!!
From the photo's provided it's not clear how the push rods or cam work? Does Arao Engineering re work the block? Think you could post up a link with detailed pics? Thanks

The actuation of the multiple valves is by forked rockers whose motion is transmitted by pushrods from the stock location camshaft. Rockers are shaft-mounted. Roller-type lifters are recommended to take maximum advantage of the higher volumetric efficiency and higher RPM range available with Arao Performance 32-valve Heads. A flat tappet cam with valve springs for this wider range will have a limited life.

I love the guy like a brother. And his dad Jon like an, ummm, older brother. lol
We basically started out as E mail buddies, and he showed an interest in seeing the 32 V heads. I orig was going to just go visit him and his Pop and take a head with me, but I had such a good feeling from talking to him that I loaded the whole engine [in parts] up in my car and hauled 'em up with me. He cracked up when I told him I had everything with me, and he agreed to take the project on as long as I agreed to let him do it the "right" way, as he found a lot of things he didn't like about the heads. He started working on things, and never beat me up for payment or sweated me for anything. I just bought a few things as he needed them. And then when I hit my $ probs I seriously thought I was going to have to end the project, or he might want to end the project, but he basically said if I wanted to go on we would just pick up when I had some more bux, and all I spent in a long azz time was 60 bux for a carb spacer.
The guy is a good drinking buddy, and just a plain good buddy. I know he has opinions about stuff, but who doesn't? I can't do this as a "melting pot" project, and I trust Bret. He is a dayum smart and talented engine guy, and he is in cahoots with some other very heavy hitters in the biz. And his Pop has been in the biz since working for Pontiac back in the orig GTO days. And these guys have a complete machine shop at their beck and call, and they know how to use the machines. So, if Bret and Jon can't "git R done" right, I don't know who can.

The only "extra" work done to the block is some grinding for pushrod clearance. The cam stays in the stock location, an works as "stock."

Revs would prolly go 8-8500. NO OPTI HERE! lol We're either gonna do a crank trigger, a Jesel front mount distributor, or a Summers Bros front mount distributor.

Heh, I've been pretty lucky w/ the cops around here. Only been pulled over twice in the past 5 years or so. Once I had a liscence plate light out, and the cop brought it to my attention. Then another time I kinda came out of a car wash sideways and a cop saw me. He was more interested in the car than in giving me a ticket, so he just told me to save the race car chit for the track.

All I know is that it is going to be a solid roller cam. The stock rocker ratio for these heads is 1.4, and I don't know if Bret has plans to change that, so that will def have an effect on what he specs out for the cam. And Bret is pretty "Area 54" about a lot of the stuff he does, so I might not be at liberty to say even when I do know.

Yea, he is very close to the chest on his cams.
Is this going to be a street car?
Solid roller is prob a needed setup for spinning to the moon, but how will that effect daily drivability?

Comp ratio is gonna be at around 10.5-11.0. It should run on pump gas due to the LT1's reverse cooling, and the combustion chamber design of the heads. It isn't going to be a dedicated N20 engine, the N20 will just be there to provide a 'lil extra ballz to blast through the 200 MPH mark at the Maxton Mile...

It's going to be streetable, but built more along the lines of a dual purpose road race car. And a solid cam is no problem, since it ain't like I'm going to be using the car as a daily driver. It'll be a Somerville cruiser, a 7-11 parking lot warrior, and hopefully a NJ Motorsports Park corner burner and ECTA Maxton Mile top ender.
