Well, for those that knew me when my SS had the original engine still. i had my plate on the air dam like in that first picture. I bent the top of the plate in a door jam to let it line up perfectly with the bend in the air dam. I must have drove around at least a year or so with the plate like that. I got stopped a few times, mainly during road block/checks and told i have no front plate. Id tell the officer, yes i do, "walk about 15 feet in front of the car and kneel down".. trust me, cops dont really feel comfortable doing that, lmao. but when they would theyd see it and kinda laugh. Harrington park was gonna write me up, but i got to talking about my oil consumption issues and all and about the car and the cop was cool and let me go by just saying "fix it".
at night i would never get bothered because, a cop driving towards me or sitting on the side of the road at a lower angle could see it and since its reflective it stood out and they wouldnt realize it. BTW i was dating a cops daughter then and had a plethra of different PBA cards. there was also a 6 month period where my plates wouldnt come up in either of the 2 police/dmv used databases. thats was fun. lol.
When i got the car back on the road in '07, i put it off to the side of my SS grille just to avoid any reason to get stopped. But now i dont even run the plate on the front anymore. not really sure where it is to be honest...

Actually NJ changed the law for the plate height at some point so this used to be legal. I was talking to someone at E-town about 8 years ago about this and he carried a copy of the inspection book specifically for this purpose, it only had to be on the front of the car and clearly visible. He said he would get pulled over for it then show them the inspection book and they would let him go. Now there is a restriction on how low it can be even though I bet some factory cars may not be legit because they are already low to the ground.
Double dumbass on you
Actually now the only people that want the damn front plate are police because they use it for the laser speed detectors, they need something close to perpendicular to the road to aim at, curvy surfaces dont work as well. I see Staties using the laser all the time now, usually they are hunkered down in the seat holding up what looks like a really old small film movie camera and they are resting it on the top of the door

I would not call under the car "clearly visible". Either way, our inspection books had placement requirements a bit more detailed than that, with measurements that I don't remember anymore (it was over 8 years ago). I don't know what 'book' that guy had. I guess he drove around with a 3 ring binder of state documents - that is what the state issued us.

Only thing you might get hit for is the height requirements and "plain visbility" clause which is left purposely ambiguous to be left up to officers discretion, the same way words like "annoying", "disruptive", "offensive" or "disturbance" are used in public nuisance and disorderly statutes. Some towns/officers will enforce it on sight just because of the towns mentality towards it, most will probably only enforce it if you piss them off ie. loud music, loud exhuast, driving around looking like a dirtbag or fist pumping jerkass who you wouldnt give two ****s about giving a bs ticket too...same as tint, things hanging from the rear view, etc...etc.
"NJSA Title 39:3-33. Markers; requirements concerning; display of fictitious or wrong numbers, etc.; punishment (markers: plates)
39:3-33. The owner of an automobile which is driven on the public highways of this State shall display not less than 12 inches nor more than 48 inches from the ground in a horizontal position, and in such a way as not to swing, an identification mark or marks to be furnished by the division; provided, that if two marks are issued they shall be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle;........."
yadda yadda...
"The identification mark or marks shall contain the number of the registration certificate of the vehicle and shall be of such design and material as prescribed pursuant to section 2 of P.L.1989, c.202 (C.39:3-33.9). All identification marks shall be kept clear and distinct and free from grease, dust or other blurring matter, so as to be plainly visible at all times of the day and night.
No person shall drive a motor vehicle which has a license plate frame or identification marker holder that conceals or otherwise obscures any part of any marking imprinted upon the vehicle's registration plate or any part of any insert which the director, as hereinafter provided, issues to be inserted in and attached to that registration plate or marker. "

when I had my 87 iroc I was pulled aside at a roadside inspection (not the police but nj state inspectors!!) on rt 130,I had a camaro plate covering my nj plate and the inspector said if I cant take the plate off and properly display my nj plate i would get a summons and he would take my inspection sticker off and put a reject sticker on and that I would have to go through a full nj inspection all over again!!So dont cover or remove your plate because it will either cost you some $$$ and maybe have to get your car reinspected by a state facility.NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!!

What he said ----^. But underneath the car like that will warrant a ticket. It has to be visible. The exact quote on the ticket is, "Unclear plate", so 100% ticket right there. But I've ran no plates since i was 17... i'm 25 now and have received 4 tickets total. $216 in fines over 8 years.... id say its worth no plate.

the last time i checked, the front plate bill was still "in committee". contact your new jersey lawmakers in order to push this issue through. i can't do it by myself.

"Also might wanna check into the LE plates...they've kept me out of trouble."
Not necessarily. I've received alerts from bosses about this; drug dealers and other such criminals are purposely getting these plates in the hopes that a cop will see them and not pull them over. If your car's got violations (Tinted windows, missing plates, obstructions hanging from the rearview mirror, etc.), it doesn't matter what plates you have. There's a good chance you'll get stopped anyway. ANYONE can get these plates, they are not specific to law enforcement. Here in New Jersey, the same thing applies to the "Associate Member" Fraternal Order of Police shields. ANYONE can get them, so they don't help much.
As for the front plate issue, I recommend putting it on where it's visible and where it belongs. It sucks, but it's still a violation not to.
