Exclamation Ut...Oh....help lol

well, i just got a job today (finally!) and what happens as im pulling out? 2nd gear starts to make a really loud squealing sound...now i have never heard a tranny do this before lol the suspension is 33 years old so i figured it was that, but it goes away when the clutch is engaged and doesnt do it in the other 3 gears. it doesnt do it EVERY time im in 2nd gear only most of the ride home, i just drove home from revving 1st to about 3k then shifting to 3rd lol, i BELIEVE it is a T-10 tranny, although it could be a Saginaw. the guy i bought the car from said it was a Muncie, and i couldnt hear the whine over the open headers, but...its not. anyone know if this is a really bad problem? its not a grinding noise like i have heard from trannies before, and it seems to have no problem engaging in gear, its just...odd.

I'd have to hear it, but could need a clutch or clutch adjustment. don't think i've heard a manual trans squeal.


Not all muncies whine. just the ones with straight cut gears - M22s? I always mix up the codes.

the clutch is new, a friend of mine and i put it in maybe...a month ago? and the sound almost sounds like plastics rubbing or something weird, but its loud, the pedal has about an inch of free play in it like its supposed to, and my friends dad who is an old muscle car guru supervised and did some work himself =/

clutches are sensitive.. im not doubting your friends dads knowledge, but that could be part of your problem

yeah i hear ya, but he's a retired Mechanic for GM lol his garage is as good as most auto garages lol, could it be the tranny oil possibly? if it were the clutch i would think it would be in all the gears wouldnt it?

It might just need some adjustment now that it has broken in a bit. I adjusted mine once or so too.

i also had a weird issue with my bell housing dust cover. the arp flywheel bolts were too long and hit it, it made an ungodly metal noise all the time. But i doubt that is your problem.

yeah he said it may need adjustment if you feel alot of free play in the pedal but its about an inch where it has been, and my car makes so many noises its hard to hear what they are, when i turn the body roll causes alot of tire roar and suspension rubbing lol and the windows have 0 weather stripping so you get alot of wind noise, and the entire interior squeaks and rattles lol the small header leak doesnt help either, so when some certain noise grabs my attention you better believe im concerned lol

I had to clearance an inspection cover after a clutch install. Worked fine before, but not after.

Did you also replace the throwout bearing?

yeah i kind of figured lol i was just hoping maybe someone had a similar problem and fixed it a certain way, on my other forum they said that i may need to change the gear case oil, and i have gallons of Royal Purple so i may do that 2marow, or just drive it from 1st to 3rd till i can afford a M22 Rock crusher or a 6spd from a Vette lol

although what oil did you use? weight & type. IIRC the builder I spoke with did not want synth oil in it, I'll have to check my notes. WBT refresh my memory, 4spds use like 80wt gear oil?

I have Redline MTL which is 70W80 in my M20... and I also have the dreaded bearing retainer leak that a lot of trannys get with synthetic. Adam, if you don't already have the proper gear lube, stick to regular organic 80W90 stuff. Once all of my high dollar lube pisses on the floor it will be replaced with Valvoline 80W90 as per George at AutoGear.

im not sure, for the Suburban i used auto tranny oil for Locomotives lol my dad gets it for free at the NJ transit Loco shop he works at, although i am not sure what type of oil 4spds use, i meant to ask that lol, they make standard shift oil, although they said alot of cars need gear case oil so... lol

Yeah, ATF or motor oil is wrong for a 4 speed. Maybe you do need an oil change. Oil is not oil, it is not interchangeable. Might be too late.

WBT, IIRC Jody told me the synchos or something in ST10s do not like synth. It was more than leaks, but I'd have to look, maybe my memory is shoddy.

Newer transmissions (like the T56 6 speeds in 93-02 cars) get ATF as that is what their tolerances were designed for.

Your trans will take gear lube, not ATF as it is an older 4spd.

Bob Hanlon at Hanlon Motorsports (off to the right ---->) is a manual trans guy who can help you if you wasted it. He's got some pretty good feedback from members on here.

Try the gear lube first though.

well my dad just took it for a drive, and guess what, NO SOUND! lol of course when i need a second opinion it doesnt happen, we drove around the town trying to warm it up and see but nothing, maybe it was something in the flywheel or something, it is missing the cover after all lol, and thanks, i'll try him, i might just see what he charges for changing the oil, its kind of cramped down there and i do not feel like doing it in the cold lol i need a garage
