Does anyone know anything about granite counter tops? We are redoing our kitchen, and they are charging us for "waste" granite that will be cut off from the main piece. Its a large piece, about 8sqft.

Whatever waste they remove from the final cut, you should ask for. If they do a quality job, the sink hole they cut will be a perfect rectangle with rounded corners that you can reuse. If they hack it to death, they're lazy.
When they cut my counter top, they plunge cut the straight sides of the sink hole then used some kind of hole saw to turn the corners. They supported the piece from below with a jack (the cut wasn't done at my house). The rest was a nice "waste" piece that was reused. Ask about that.

Edit: Come to think of it, this is all wet cutting so not sure how they turned the corners. We were told they used some kind of hole saw thing that also did wet cuts. Dunno.

They will charge you for the full slab because the rest of it will sit in inventory until another customer comes along that just happens to want the same color and only needs that size piece to finish their job. It could be in their shop for 2 weeks or 20 years, who knows.

Another idea, if it's a nice neutral color, maybe have them make a new bathroom vanity top with the scrap piece?

I guess I never thought of it that way, but it looks like we will be getting the waste material after all.

its because he's using that piece of granite to do your counters and instead of keeping around such an irregular piece of granite on the off chance he can use it again, he charges you for it and wipes his hand clean of trying to get back the money he put out to custom fit a piece of granite to your cabinets.

say he pays 100 for the slab he cuts for your counter, but he only used 80 dollars worth of that slab, is it fair for him to have to eat 20 dollars out of his own pocket for your counter? no. so he charges you for the full slab and whatever is left over is yours if you wish. take advantage of that situation like the others in this thread have and use the extra for some type of counter-ular accessory

Correct. They never offerd or even gave us the option to take the waste. It was just "its gunna be $600 more then we quoted" came out of the blue. We expected about a 350-400 increase because of the island we put in, but thats it.

I have no problem and I guess I can understand the whole deal. I just have never heard of that in any other field or any other industry. It seemed odd to me. Oh well, live and learn.

 | Yep, that is the way it is - weird as it sounds. My wife's cousin did our countertops last year and he charged us his price for the whole slab. They will most likely never use the leftover piece unless someone has a small job and wants that color, that's why I suggested a bathroom vanity or something else. You'll see that there's variations in slabs of granite, even within the same color - the graining may be more pronounced in one vs. another, or may have more crystal deposits, so it's tough to match unless you're working with one whole slab.

Have them give it to you. He's just going to charge you for it, then turn around and sell it and make double the money off of it.
