looking for a nice place to eat in NYC...

I'm looking to find a nice, decent, casual restaurant in NYC to go out to eat next weekend. Price isn't a concern, i know NYC is expensive anyways, but I'm not looking for a high-end type of place. And I want to stay away from the typical TGIfriday, applebees, etc obviously though.
Some place with American cuisine, and a nice environment.

If it comes down to it, the Weehawken/Edgewater NJ area would work too.

 Any suggestions?

I was going to say Carmines, but that can be a bit much for just two. Way better for 4+, family style Italian.
There is a great Brazilian BBQ in the area, I'll try to remember the name. Not for the vegetarian.

yea only two of us, and as of now i dont currently know what she does and doesnt eat. Hence the reason id like to stay away from seafood, BBQ/steakhouses or very ethnic places. Even just a cool little-known hip diner would be fine. lol

I would also suggest Carmines. Their food is awesome! I enjoy their calamari with spaghetti, the red sauce is great!
Like Bonzo said, its family sizes though, so me and the gf just tend to order 1 meal for the both of us and still have lots left over. But this makes for great pricing too!

"id like to stay away from seafood, BBQ/steakhouses or very ethnic places" - that rules out places I know.
Does she like the Yanks? Mickey Mantles at the south end of the park http://www.mickeymantles.com/
Jekyll and Hyde is kind of interesting. If she is young try Mars2112

I would suggest Felidia (sometimes Lidia is even there) as she serves a bit of everything and the food is top notch. Docks Oyster Bar (not just seafood) is also very good but you said no steak / seafood. I would ask what she likes and go from there. We can give you better options based on what you want.
